Job description


A bilingual teacher in the Rochester City School District is responsible to provide instruction in English as well as in the primary language of English Language Learners (ELL) according to individual student strengths and needs. Such instruction will be in content areas according to New York State Learning Standards, to facilitate each student's academic success. The bilingual teacher works and cooperates with colleagues in order to establish a supportive, nurturing and rigorous learning environment, paying particular attention to the student's language, culture and background. He or she communicates with parents regarding the students' progress in all areas of school life. He or she is responsible for monitoring student progress and maintaining all classroom records, including language proficiency.
Responsibilities
Must be fluent in both languages used in instruction, and knowledgeable of diverse cultural backgrounds, in order to assess and meet cultural and linguistic strengths and needs of students.
Provides instruction in varying group sizes and/or individually, as prescribed by the school, the district, and the State Department of Education.
This includes citizenship, socio-cultural development and one or more of the following academic areas: Native Language Arts; English language arts; mathematics; social studies; science; health; and art.
Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior needed to achieve an optimal learning environment in the classroom.
Develops lesson plans and instructional materials taking into account the language and cultural strengths and needs of the students, in collaboration with grade level and content area colleagues, in accordance to NYS Standards.
Evaluates student language development in both languages, as appropriate, keeps an accurate record of academic progress and communicates with parents and district on individual student progress.
Identifies students' strengths and needs, and cooperates with other professional staff members such as ESOL, Speech and Audiology, nurses and school psychologists in assessing areas of health, social-emotional development and learning.
Promotes professional growth and development through participation in current, research-based instructional practice trainings/activities provided by the district and/or self-selected through individual professional development planning.
Completes all reports as required, including student evaluation, inventories, orders, program evaluation and lesson plans.
Interprets the educational program to parents and other community members through personal conferences, meetings and various media using the primary language when appropriate.
Minimum Salary: $51,500 per year
Maximum Salary: $73,026 per year
Qualifications
New York State Bilingual Extension Certificate and Professional Teaching Certificate or be eligible for a New York State certification in areas listed
