What is a bid paint?

Bid Paint jobs refer to positions responsible for preparing, estimating, and submitting bids or proposals for painting projects. Individuals in this role evaluate project requirements, calculate costs for labor, materials, and equipment, and ensure their bids are competitive and accurate. They often work for painting contractors, construction firms, or as independent estimators, and play a crucial role in helping their organizations win contracts for residential, commercial, or industrial painting projects.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a bid paint?

To thrive as a Bid Painter, you need expertise in surface preparation, paint application techniques, and a solid understanding of project specifications, often supported by a high school diploma or vocational training in painting. Attention to detail, time management, and strong communication skills help distinguish top performers in this field. These skills and qualities are essential for delivering accurate estimates, high-quality finishes, and maintaining client satisfaction on commercial and residential projects.

Company: PaintWorx

Location: Sterling, Virginia

Employment Type: Full-time

Work Arrangement: Primarily onsite with occasional regional travel

Compensation: $70,000 – $85,000+ annually, based on experience

The Opportunity

PaintWorx is seeking a Commercial Paint Estimator to support the continued growth of our commercial division. In this role, you will prepare accurate, competitive estimates for commercial painting, specialty-coating, and flooring projects throughout the Washington, DC metropolitan area.

You will take ownership of opportunities from bid invitation through project turnover, working closely with leadership, field operations, and project coordination teams. This is an opportunity to join an established company where your work will be visible, your ideas will be valued, and you will have room to grow into broader responsibilities over time.

What You Will Do

  • Review project drawings, specifications, addenda, and bid requirements.
  • Complete detailed takeoffs and prepare accurate labor, material, equipment, and subcontractor estimates.
  • Develop competitive bids for commercial interior and exterior painting projects.
  • Estimate specialty scopes such as epoxy flooring, concrete densifiers, sealers, high-performance coatings, wall coverings, and related finishes.
  • Identify access, equipment, scheduling, and production considerations that may affect pricing or execution.
  • Manage multiple bids, deadlines, and priorities simultaneously.
  • Coordinate with field leaders and subject-matter experts when additional operational input is needed.
  • Participate in pre-bid meetings, virtual coordination meetings, and occasional site visits.
  • Assist with project turnover after award by organizing scope details, assumptions, exclusions, and supporting documentation.
  • Maintain communication with customers and general contractors throughout the estimating and transition process.
  • Support profitable growth by evaluating risk, protecting margin, and identifying opportunities for value engineering.

Required Qualifications

  • Three or more years of experience in commercial estimating, construction estimating, or a closely related role.
  • Experience reading commercial construction plans, specifications, and bid documents.
  • Working knowledge of estimating principles, labor production, materials, equipment, and project costs.
  • Ability to prepare organized, accurate, and complete estimates.
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple deadlines.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with office, field, and leadership teams.
  • Willingness to attend occasional project meetings and site visits throughout the Northern Virginia, Washington, DC, and surrounding regional market.
  • Proficiency with estimating software or the ability to learn PaintWorx systems quickly.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Commercial painting or specialty-coatings estimating experience.
  • Proficiency with PlanSwift.
  • Experience working with Procore or a similar construction-management platform.
  • Experience estimating epoxy flooring, concrete densifiers, sealers, wall coverings, or high-performance coating systems.
  • Familiarity with mission-critical, data-center, airport, healthcare, education, government, retail, hospitality, or large commercial projects.
  • Experience working in the Washington, DC metropolitan construction market.
  • Familiarity with prevailing-wage or government-funded projects.
  • Existing relationships with regional general contractors, customers, or industry partners.
  • Interest in developing into broader preconstruction, project-management, or commercial leadership responsibilities.

Prior hands-on painting experience is helpful but not required.

Compensation and Benefits

PaintWorx offers a competitive compensation and benefits package that includes:

  • Annual salary of $70,000–$85,000+, based on experience.
  • Employer-paid medical and dental insurance for individual employee coverage.
  • 401(k) retirement plan with employer match.
  • Profit-sharing opportunities.
  • Paid holidays, vacation time, and sick leave.
  • Employee referral bonus program.
  • Biweekly pay.
  • Company-provided technology, including a smartphone or tablet as needed.
  • Professional development and manufacturer training.
  • Access to OSHA, fall-protection, lift, and other applicable safety certifications.
  • Mentorship and opportunities for long-term career advancement.
