Job Summary
The Rotary Grinder Operator is responsible for operating rotary grinding equipment to grind smoothly, and finish steel components to precise specifications. This role involves working with structural steel, plate, and fabricated parts, ensuring all finished materials meet quality and safety standards required in steel fabrication operations.
Key Responsibilities
  • Perform daily safety and maintenance checks, including inspection of grinding segments, dresser condition, lubrication points, and lifting magnets
  • Follow all safety requirements and maintain proper housekeeping in the work area
  • Verify production orders against materials and confirm dimensions, grade, and specifications before processing
  • Inspect parts for defects, including flame-cut surfaces, squareness, and hardness requirements
  • Set up and operate rotary grinding equipment, including magnet operation, table movement, and grinding head adjustments
  • Perform first-side and second-side grinding operations to remove material and achieve required tolerances
  • Determine part bow and apply proper shimming techniques to ensure flatness and accuracy
  • Calculate stock removal requirements based on shim placement and part condition
  • Use precision tools (micrometers, depth mics, gauges) to monitor thickness and final dimensions
  • Deburr, clean, and prepare parts between grinding operations
  • Inspect finished parts to ensure compliance with customer specifications
  • Mark completed parts with order numbers, customer identification, and special instructions
  • Complete production documentation, labor tickets, and job tracking updates
  • Communicate issues or non-conformances to supervisors or lead personnel
Required Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED preferred
  • Experience in steel grinding, machining, or fabrication environment
  • Ability to read and interpret production orders, work instructions, and shop drawings
  • Proficiency in using precision measuring instruments (micrometers, calipers, gauges)
  • Basic math skills for measurement, tolerances, and material removal calculations
  • Mechanical aptitude and ability to operate industrial machinery
  • Ability to safely handle heavy steel materials
  • Strong understanding of workplace safety practices and PPE requirements
Preferred Skills
  • Experience operating rotary or surface grinding machines in a steel service center
  • Knowledge of steel grades, properties, and heat-treated materials
  • Experience with shimming techniques and flatness correction
