Both roles are essential in data-driven organizations and often collaborate to ensure efficient data flow and analysis.

What are some common challenges BI Data Architects face when integrating data from multiple sources?

BI Data Architects often encounter challenges related to data consistency, quality, and compatibility when integrating information from various systems. Different source systems may have unique data formats, structures, and definitions, which require careful mapping and transformation. Ensuring that data remains accurate and up-to-date during extraction, transformation, and loading (ETL) processes is crucial. Additionally, collaborating closely with both business stakeholders and technical teams is essential to align data models with business needs and maintain governance standards.

Are data architects in high demand?

Data architects are in high demand due to the increasing need for organizations to manage large volumes of data and develop scalable data infrastructure. They typically require expertise in database design, data modeling, and tools like SQL and cloud platforms, making their skills highly sought after across various industries.

What is a BI data architect?

A BI data architect is a professional responsible for designing and managing the data infrastructure that supports business intelligence (BI) systems. They develop data models, oversee data integration, and ensure data quality to enable effective reporting and analytics, often using tools like SQL, data warehouses, and ETL processes.

Proficiency with tools like SQL, ETL platforms, data warehousing solutions (e.g., Snowflake, Redshift), and BI software (such as Tableau or Power BI), along with relevant certifications, is essential. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication skills help you collaborate with stakeholders and translate business requirements into technical solutions. These competencies are crucial for designing scalable, efficient data architectures that support informed decision-making and organizational goals.

  • Guide teams on Databricks best practices.

  • Maintain data architecture roadmaps and priorities.

  • Balance short‑term delivery with long‑term scalability and articulate tradeoffs.

  • Evaluate emerging technologies to inform modernization and future investments.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science or related technology degree. Professional certificate or a graduate degree highly regarded.

  • Minimum of 8-10 years of experience in data architecture including data modeling, data integration, business intelligence (BI), data marts, data lakes and data warehousing, data architecture and data model design.

  • Experience with Databricks, Azure Data Factory, and Power BI.
