What is a BGA Rework Technician?

BGA Rework Technicians are specialized professionals who repair, replace, or rework Ball Grid Array (BGA) components on printed circuit boards (PCBs). They use specialized equipment and techniques to remove faulty BGAs, prepare the PCB, and install new components without damaging the board. Their role is critical in electronics manufacturing and repair, ensuring devices function correctly after assembly or repair. BGA Rework Technicians need strong attention to detail, knowledge of soldering techniques, and familiarity with rework stations and inspection tools.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be a BGA Rework Technician?

To thrive as a BGA Rework Technician, you need a solid understanding of electronics, soldering techniques, and experience with surface mount technology (SMT), often supported by a relevant technical diploma or certification. Familiarity with rework stations, hot air reflow equipment, microscopes, and inspection systems like X-ray machines is typically required. Attention to detail, steady hands, and strong problem-solving skills are crucial soft skills for ensuring precision and quality. These skills are vital for accurately repairing and reworking complex circuit boards, reducing defects, and maintaining product reliability.

What challenges do BGA Rework Technicians face during the rework process, and how are they addressed?

BGA Rework Technicians often encounter challenges such as precise alignment of components, avoiding overheating during soldering, and detecting hidden solder joint defects. These issues are typically managed by using specialized equipment like rework stations with precise temperature controls, X-ray inspection systems for quality assurance, and custom stencils for accurate solder paste application. Technicians also follow strict process guidelines and continuous training to ensure high reliability of repairs and minimize the risk of damaging delicate PCBs.

What is the difference between Bga Rework Technician vs Soldering Technician?

AspectBga Rework TechnicianSoldering Technician
CertificationsIPC-7711/7721, IPC-A-610IPC certifications, basic soldering certifications
Work EnvironmentElectronics manufacturing, repair labsElectronics assembly, repair workshops
Job FocusReworking BGA components, precise placementSoldering components, general assembly

The Bga Rework Technician specializes in repairing and reworking Ball Grid Array components, requiring specific certifications and precision work. In contrast, a Soldering Technician performs general soldering tasks across various electronic components. While both roles involve soldering skills, the Bga Rework Technician's work is more specialized, often involving complex rework processes in electronics manufacturing or repair environments.

Job description

K2 is building the largest and highest-power satellites ever flown, unlocking performance levels previously out of reach across every orbit. Backed by $450M from leading investors including Altimeter Capital, Redpoint Ventures, T. Rowe Price, Lightspeed Venture Partners, Alpine Space Ventures, and others - with an additional $500M in signed contracts across commercial and US government customers - we're mass-producing the highest-power satellite platforms ever built for missions from LEO to deep space.
The rise of heavy-lift launch vehicles is shifting the industry from an era of mass constraint to one of mass abundance, and we believe this new era demands a fundamentally different class of spacecraft. Engineered to survive the harshest radiation environments and to fully capitalize on today's and tomorrow's massive rockets, K2 satellites deliver unmatched capability at constellation scale and across multiple orbits.
With multiple launches planned through 2026 and 2027, we're Building Bigger to develop the solar system and become a Kardashev Type II (K2) civilization. If you are a motivated individual who thrives in a fast-paced environment and you're excited about contributing to the success of a groundbreaking Series C space startup, we'd love for you to apply.
The Role
You will play a key role in the development and production of the avionics systems for the K2 Mega-class satellite platform. This position requires deep technical expertise in reworking high reliability PCBAs, collaborating closely with Design and Test Engineers, and supporting avionics testing infrastructure and flight builds. You will also support wire harness fabrication as needed to help support the wider team.
Responsibilities
  • Perform precision hand soldering and rework of printed circuit boards (PCBs), including removal and replacement of 0402 and smaller SMT components using hot air, micro-soldering, and reflow techniques
  • Hand-solder (population/depopulation) Bottom Termination Components (BTC)
  • Modify traces or pads and run jumper wire on PCB
  • Support subassemblies and fabricate test harnesses for avionics testing
  • Perform component kitting from inventory as needed
  • Support hardware troubleshooting with Engineering teams to resolve board failures and design updates
  • Maintain ESD-safe practices at all times when handling electronics
  • Provide training to other technicians to help scale production across development and flight
  • Provide consistent process improvement feedback to Engineering and Production Leadership

Qualifications
  • 5+ years of experience soldering electronic components for PCBAs
  • Proficiency with basic tools: soldering irons, hot air tools, and component handling for 0201, 0402, and BGA/QFN packages
  • Experience with reballing and reworking fine-pitch BGAs
  • Demonstrated ability to rework and repair complex assemblies to IPC-7711/7721 standards
  • Experience building and inspecting flight-quality cable and harness assemblies
  • Ability to follow schematics, work instructions, and drawings with minimal supervision
  • Familiarity with ESD requirements for components and PCB/PCBAs
  • Demonstrated high level of ownership and problem-solving skills

Nice to Have
  • IPC-A-610, IPC-A-620, IPC-7711/7721, J-STD-001, NASA-STD-8739.3
  • Experience fabricating harnesses from assembly drawings and schematics
  • Ability to read, review, and redline electrical schematics and mechanical drawings
  • Experience with various potting and encapsulation techniques
  • Previous experience supporting environmental or functional testing of avionics assemblies
  • Strong communication skills with ability to communicate hardware and systems problems

Additional Requirements
  • Must be able to perform repetitive tasks such as bending or twisting, grasping, standing, lifting, pulling, pushing, stooping, stretching, carrying, and use hands to operate tools or machine controls
  • Must be able to lift and carry parts or equipment up to 50 lbs. unassisted
  • Must be able to stand for extended periods of time
  • Must be able to work extended hours and/or weekends as needed

Compensation and Benefits:
  • Hourly pay range for this non-exempt role is $38 - $48 + equity in the company
  • Compensation will be based on several factors including, but not limited to: knowledge and skills, education, and experience level
  • Comprehensive benefits package including paid time off, medical/dental/vision coverage, life insurance, paid parental leave, and many other perks

If you don't meet 100% of the preferred skills and experience, we encourage you to still apply! Building a spacecraft unlike any other requires a team unlike any other and non-traditional career twists and turns are encouraged!
If you need a reasonable accommodation as part of your application for employment or interviews with us, please let us know.
