How we serve our customers is constantly evolving and is a challenge we gladly accept. Whether you're finding new ways to prevent identity fraud or enabling customers to start a new business, you can work with one of the most valuable data sets in the world to identify insights and actions that can have a meaningful impact on our customers and our business. And, with opportunities to learn from leaders who have defined the course of our industry, you can grow your career and define your own path. Find your place in risk and analytics on #TeamAmex.
The Global Risk & Compliance Organization ("GRC") is an independent risk management function, led by the Chief Risk Officer, with the objective of ensuring that American Express operates in a safe, sound, and fully compliant manner within all applicable regulatory expectations. GRC creates and maintains the overall risk management framework, performs independent risk management assessments, and monitors applicable risks.
Colleagues at GRC are passionate about our commitment to drive the Company's goals of growth and progress by creating a culture of risk awareness and proactivity around regulatory matters. By partnering closely with business units across the enterprise, we help deliver maximum value to our shareholders and our customers through effective risk management and oversight activities.
GRC's Enterprise Risk Management & Risk Oversight (ERM&RO) organization is seeking a Manager to join a newly created team driving Change Risk oversight across American Express. This role goes beyond traditional governance, offering the opportunity to design and embed new risk management processes, shape policies and standards, and build a body of knowledge that strengthens how we manage change across the enterprise. Success requires more than box-checking, it calls for a strategic thinker who can influence and partner with stakeholders, challenge the status quo, and help transform the way we govern risk in a dynamic, global environment.
Responsibilities
  • Shape and advance the development, implementation, and ongoing enhancement of an enterprise change governance framework, applying graduated requirements tailored to project classifications and ensuring governance evolves with the needs of the business.
  • Proactively identify and prioritize risk-related gaps (including those highlighted by regulators) while driving timely, effective, and sustainable remediation that reduces exposures to acceptable levels and prevents recurrence.
  • Synthesize and communicate risk data, emerging trends, and insights through structured, impactful reporting to senior leadership and the board of directors, ensuring decision-makers receive timely, accurate, and actionable information.
  • Guide and influence first-line stakeholders in designing, refining, and maintaining procedures that effectively embed the governance framework into business operations, balancing rigor with practical execution.
  • Maintain a deep understanding of relevant laws, regulations, and industry standards (e.g., Heightened Standards, FFIEC, PMBOK), ensuring that risk practices not only comply with regulatory expectations but also strengthen the enterprise's resilience and transformation efforts.
  • Design and deliver engaging training and awareness programs for first- and second-line professionals, senior management, and the board, building organizational capability and embedding a strong culture of risk-aware transformation.

Qualifications
Experience
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in risk, compliance, legal, or regulatory roles in a Global Systemically Important Bank (GSIB)
  • Experience with project management and governance required; Project Management Professional (PMP) certification is a plus
  • Bachelor's degree required, advanced degree a plus
  • Global Association of Risk Professionals (GARP) certification is a plus

Skills
  • Strong communication skills is a must, particularly written communication
  • Discretion when exposed to restricted/secret company information
  • Self-starter who works well independently in white space
  • Able to effectively manage multiple and often conflicting priorities under tight timeframes and adapt to frequent change
  • Able to lead without authority derived from band level
  • Highly organized with attention to detail, sense of follow-through, and accountability

Employment eligibility to work with American Express in the United States is required as the company will not pursue visa sponsorship for these positions.
