What you will do:
We are looking for a API INTEGRATIONS DEVELOPER who can help shape our vision and support our mission. Here is what the position will look like.
  • Design, develop, and maintain RESTful APIs using Python (Flask, FastAPI, Django), Node.js, Java, or .NET.
  • Implement API best practices including idempotency, pagination, filtering, sorting, and versioning.
  • Build secure authentication and authorization flows (OAuth2, JWT, API keys, mTLS).
  • Create and maintain OpenAPI/Swagger documentation and Postman collections.
  • Develop serialization/deserialization logic for JSON, XML, and healthcare-specific schemas.
  • Build integrations with EHRs, clearinghouses, PBMs, HIEs, CMS systems, and state Medicaid platforms.
  • Translate and map X12 EDI transactions (270/271, 276/277, 278, 834, 835, 837) into API-ready data models.
  • Implement HL7 FHIR-based APIs for Patient Access, Provider Directory, and Payer-to-Payer exchange.
  • Work with HL7 v2, CDA, and common FHIR resources (Patient, Coverage, Claim, EOB, etc.).
  • Apply payer-specific business logic including eligibility rules, dual-eligibility, MCO structures, program codes, and retroactive eligibility.
  • Support encounter reporting, capitation logic, and risk corridor adjustments.
  • Understand state-specific Medicaid program variations and regulatory requirements.
  • Work with payer data models including members, providers, claims, encounters, coverage, risk scores, and care gaps.
  • Build ETL pipelines and real-time data flows using queues, events, and batch processing.
  • Design SQL queries, stored procedures, and schemas using SQL Server or Snowflake.
  • Implement SCDs, snapshot tables, system-versioned tables, and Data Vault 2.0 patterns.
  • Ensure all API and data workflows comply with HIPAA, CMS interoperability rules, and PHI/PII handling standards.
  • Implement audit trails, lineage tracking, and data retention policies.
  • Apply the Minimum Necessary Standard across all data access patterns.
  • Deploy services using Docker, Kubernetes, and CI/CD pipelines (GitHub Actions, Azure DevOps, Jenkins).
  • Implement structured logging, distributed tracing, metrics, and error monitoring using ELK, Datadog, Prometheus, or Grafana.
  • Collaborate with infrastructure teams across AWS, Azure, GCP, or hybrid environments.
  • Write unit tests (pytest, JUnit), integration tests, and contract tests (Pact).
  • Conduct performance testing using k6 or Locust.
  • Ensure high reliability and auditability of all API endpoints.

What you will bring:
Education: Bachelor's degree in computer science or related field required or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Experience: 4+ years of backend development experience (Python, Node.js, Java, or .NET).Hands-on experience with HL7 FHIR and X12 EDI transactions.Experience working with healthcare payer systems.Experience with OAuth2, JWT, RBAC/ABAC, and secure API design. Preferred experience includesexperience implementing a FHIR server or FHIR gateway. Experience with EDI translation engines.Experience with risk adjustment models. Experience with API gateways and reverse-proxy security patterns.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Strong understanding of REST API design and distributed systems. Strong SQL skills including query optimization and advanced joins. Familiarity with HIPAA, CMS interoperability rules, and PHI governance. Knowledge of member, provider, claims, encounters, coverage, risk scores, and care gap data structures. Strong understanding of HIPAA, PHI/PII handling, CMS interoperability rules, RBAC/ABAC, OAuth2, JWT, and mTLS. Knowledge of relational database design, normalization/denormalization strategies, SCDs, snapshot tables, and system-versioned tables. Understanding of Patient Access API, Provider Directory API, and Payer-to-Payer data exchange requirements. Skilled in designing and implementing RESTful APIs with Python, Node.js, Java, or .NET. Ability to build and maintain integrations with EHRs, clearinghouses, PBMs, HIEs, and state Medicaid systems. Ability to convert business rules and regulatory requirements into technical API and integration solutions. Ability to navigate payer ecosystems, legacy systems, and multi-vendor healthcare environments. Demonstrates support for the company's mission, vision and values. Position requires excellent written and verbal communication skills. Must be proficient in Microsoft office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, SharePoint) with ability to work with a variety of project management tools. May be required to manage multiple priorities and projects with tight deadlines.

Pay, Perks and Benefits at Colorado Access:
The compensation for this position is $118,600.00 - $133,300.00 annually. Colorado Access has provided a compensation range that represents its good faith estimate of what Colorado Access may pay for the position at the time of posting. Colorado Access may ultimately pay more or less than the posted compensation range. The salary offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information, but not based on a candidate's sex or any other protected status.
