Gilbane is seeking a The Senior Safety Manager leads the safety function for a single Business Unit (BU) or multiple small Business Units. This role is assigned to the Federal Division.

Responsibilities
  • Lead the implementation and continuous improvement of the Gilbane Cares safety culture throughout the Business Unit.
  • Support pursuit and preconstruction activities by reviewing RFPs, contract requirements, project execution plans, and schedules to identify safety, operational, and contractual risks.
  • Partner with project leadership to evaluate high risk activities, identify emerging hazards, develop practical risk mitigation strategies, and verify the effectiveness of risk controls.
  • Analyze Black Line (planned) versus Blue Line (executed) performance to identify execution gaps, resource constraints, operational risks, and opportunities for improvement.
  • Prepare and present monthly Business Unit safety performance reviews to Business Unit leadership and the Safety Director, including leading and lagging indicators, high energy and high risk trends, control effectiveness, and actionable recommendations.
  • Monitor project performance trends and communicate risk observations and recommendations to project stakeholders.
  • Incorporate lessons learned, collaborative learning events, and industry best practices into future project planning and execution.
  • Develop, distribute, and ensure understanding of project specific Safety Plans based on the Safety Alignment Assessment process.
  • Lead Business Unit implementation of Hammertech frequent inspections analyzing trends, coaching project teams, monitoring corrective actions, and ensuring timely closure of action items.
  • Mentor project teams in hazard identification, risk assessment, and effective use of Hammertech.
  • Assist project teams in developing and implementing corrective action plans.
  • Identify, develop, and deliver safety training programs, including Safety Expectation training, High energy control standards, Playbooks, orientations, and other Business Unit initiatives.
  • Ensure all incidents are investigated, documented, and closed in accordance with Gilbane policy while supporting Collaborative Learning Events (CLEs), factor analysis, and corrective action implementation.
  • Provide leadership, coaching, mentoring, and career development for Safety Managers/SSHOs.
  • Foster a positive, inclusive, and high performing team environment that promotes accountability and continuous improvement.
  • Support business development through client safety prequalification's, interviews, presentations, and pursuit activities.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with clients, trade partners, regulatory agencies, and industry organizations.
  • Attend peer group meetings and participate in professional organizations as directed by the Safety Director.

Experience / Education
  • Bachelor's degree in Occupational Safety, Engineering, or a related field preferred.
  • Minimum of 10 years of construction industry experience, including at least 5 years supporting federal construction projects.
  • Minimum of 3 years of safety leadership experience overseeing multiple projects across various locations and time zones.
  • Associate Safety Professional (ASP) or Certified Safety Professional (CSP) certification preferred.
  • Authorized OSHA Outreach Trainer and Gilbane University instructor, or the ability to obtain required authorizations.
  • Experience reviewing RFPs, contract requirements, project schedules, and execution plans to identify project risks.
  • Experience supporting pursuit, preconstruction, mobilization, and project execution activities.
  • Experience conducting risk assessments, evaluating high risk construction activities, validating control effectiveness, and developing mitigation strategies for complex federal construction projects.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Comprehensive knowledge of construction safety principles, OSHA regulations, EM 385-1-1, federal contract safety requirements, and industry best practices.
  • Proven ability to identify current and emerging project risks and recommend effective mitigation strategies.
  • Strong understanding of project planning, scheduling, and construction execution processes.
  • Ability to evaluate Black Line versus Blue Line performance and identify execution gaps that may impact safety or operations.
  • Experience leading Safety, Health, and Environmental (SHE) programs on complex and federal construction projects.
  • Experience implementing Serious Injury and Fatality (SIF) prevention strategies and risk management processes.
  • Strong leadership, organizational, analytical, and critical thinking skills.
  • Excellent written, verbal, presentation, and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • Ability to influence project teams, clients, subcontractors, and senior leadership.
  • Strong proficiency with Microsoft Office and construction safety management systems, including Hammertech.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects, priorities, and competing deadlines while maintaining a high safety standard of performance.
  • Willingness and ability to travel frequently in support of Business Unit operations.
