What is a BESS Application engineer?

A BESS Application Engineer is a professional who specializes in the design, implementation, and optimization of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). They work closely with clients to understand energy storage requirements, select suitable technologies, and ensure systems are integrated effectively with renewable energy sources or grid infrastructure. Their role involves technical analysis, system specification, and supporting the deployment and operation of BESS projects. BESS Application Engineers often collaborate with project managers, electrical engineers, and software developers to deliver reliable and efficient energy storage solutions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a BESS Application engineer?

To thrive as a BESS (Battery Energy Storage System) Application Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical engineering, energy storage systems, and system integration, often supported by a relevant degree. Proficiency with simulation tools (like MATLAB/Simulink), SCADA systems, and knowledge of grid standards or certifications such as PMP or PE are typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, effective communication, and project management skills set outstanding candidates apart. These competencies are vital to ensure safe, efficient, and reliable design and implementation of BESS projects in a rapidly evolving energy sector.

What are some common challenges faced by BESS Application engineers when integrating battery energy storage systems with existing power infrastructure?

BESS Application Engineers often encounter challenges such as ensuring seamless compatibility between new battery storage solutions and legacy grid systems, managing diverse communication protocols, and addressing site-specific installation requirements. They also need to balance project timelines with regulatory compliance, and coordinate closely with utility partners, project managers, and commissioning teams. Successfully overcoming these challenges requires strong technical knowledge, attention to detail, and effective collaboration with multidisciplinary teams.

Company Overview

LG Energy Solution Vertech, Inc. (LGES Vertech) is a full-service energy storage system supplier and integrator. Using our core strengths of expert service to our customers, unparalleled safety, and excellence in manufacturing, we bring standardized, fully integrated energy storage systems to a rapidly growing worldwide market. Our systems address our customers' needs to reduce capital equipment and installation costs while enhancing system level performance and reliability using automated monitoring systems and analytics across the battery, power conditioning and auxiliary systems. Our AEROSยฎ energy operating system is the engine of innovation to provide advanced control functions allowing our customers to maximize the value of their energy storage assets. Our service capabilities include advanced monitoring and analytics, scheduled maintenance, augmentation, and auxiliary system upgrades. The combination of excellence in battery technology and production coupled with nearly two decades of energy storage integration makes LGES Vertech a leading supplier and integrator in the power and energy markets. LG ES Vertech is a part of LG ES which is headquartered in Korea and develops the batteries that are part of the systems integrated solutions that LG ES Vertech provides. LG ES is a global leader in battery technology.

LGES Vertech is a highly matrixed, team oriented organization that fosters cross functional collaboration and innovation. The company seeks high caliber candidates with proven experience and with characteristics that embody our corporate commitment to the virtues of humble, hungry and smart in all we do. Our diverse and growing team enjoys competitive salaries, generous benefits, including 100% employer sponsored medical, dental, vision, life and disability insurance.

We are hiring two Battery Application Engineers to join the newly established Battery Application Engineering Team in Westborough, MA. Each engineer will serve as a primary technical resource for LGES Vertechโ€™s ESS product lines, supporting both AC and DC LINKs. AC and DC LINKs are LGESโ€™s enclosure-based systems with AC LINK integrating both inverters and batteries into a single enclosure while the DC LINK integrates batteries in a single enclosure. Primary focus areas โ€“ AC or DC โ€“ will be determined based on each individualโ€™s background and strengths.

This is a product-focused technical role. For either product, the engineer builds a broad understanding of LGES developed battery products and serves as the US teamโ€™s internal technical resource on battery system characteristics. In addition, the hired engineer is expected to have subject matter expertise in one or more of the areas: (a) battery cells (b) DC/AC electrical systems (c) mechanical/structural/civil engineering (d) SW/controls.

The role focuses on enabling internal Sales Engineering, Project Engineering, and System Engineering teams with clear, execution-ready technical guidance and solving complex issues that arise from the integration of AC and DC LINKs in projects.

Primary Responsibilities

  • AC/DC LINK products: Develop working knowledge of AC and DC LINKs -- including product architecture, key performance parameters, electrical systems, mechanical/structural characteristics and BMS behavior -- and serve as the US team's go-to resource for product technical questions. In addition, become a subject matter expert in one of the above four areas mentioned i.e. (a) battery cells (b) DC/AC electrical systems (c) mechanical/structural/civil engineering (d) SW/controls. Since the AC LINK provides AC power, the person hired will need to understand how the AC LINK satisfies grid code requirements (e.g. LVRT, Frequency response), performs Grid Following/Grid Forming functions, enables Blackstart, etc.
  • Serve as the internal technical resource for assigned BESS product lines -- answering inquiries, supporting proposals, and clarifying product specifications for internal Sales Engineering, Project Engineering, and System Engineering teams.
  • Build and maintain standardized product documentation: Technical Datasheets, System Architecture Overviews, Interface Definitions, Compliance Summaries, and Q&A packages.
  • Track LGES HQ product updates and new product introductions; assess US market relevance and communicate changes internally.
  • Support pre-award and post-award activities: proposal reviews, technical clarifications, design deviation tracking, and customer technical queries.
  • Contribute to team knowledge base with lessons learned, templates, and case studies.
  • Coordinate with ESVT Sales Engineering, Project Engineering, System Engineering, and HQ technical teams on active proposals and projects.
  • Collect new product requirements based on customer/market information and interactions with internal partners (e.g. Sales Engineering, Project Engineering, and System Engineering teams). Work with product teams in HQ and in the US to ensure products are designed to meet these requirements.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Required:

  • 5+ years of experience in battery energy storage, power electronics, inverter/PCS system, mechanical/structural engineering for large-scale equipment, or a closely related field.
  • Technical depth in at least one of the following areas: (a) battery cells (b) DC/AC electrical systems (c) mechanical/structural/civil engineering; experience in mechanical, structural, or civil engineering aspects of large-scale battery installations (container design, mounting, thermal/HVAC, seismic, civil foundation) is highly valued and considered a strong differentiator.
  • (d) SW/controls with an emphasis on grid code requirements (e.g. LVRT, Frequency response), Grid Following/Grid Forming functions/Blackstart, etc.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical documents including engineering drawings, single-line diagrams, and product specifications.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English; Korean proficiency is a plus.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office; SharPoint experience is a plus.
  • Experience in utility-scale or C&I energy storage projects preferred.
  • Experience working across engineering, sales, and project management teams preferred.

Education

  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in Electrical engineering, Power Systems, Electrochemistry, Mechanical Engineering, Structural Engineering, Civil Engineering, Energy Engineering, SW/Controls or related field.

Working Conditions/Office Environment/Travel

  • Up to 15% -- to support customers and collaborate with international teams.
