Position Summary

The Donation Pick-up Driver is responsible for picking up merchandise from donors, safely loading the merchandise in the truck, returning to the Salvation Army locations, and unloading merchandise. Donation Pick-up Drivers are one of the most visible faces of our organization, and as such, must reflect the values of our organization. Our values apply to how we treat each other as well as how we treat customers, donors, client families and others with whom we interact.

Essential Functions

  • Operate company vehicles to make pickups and deliveries.
  • Safely load and unload donated items. Use the equipment provided on the truck to ensure safe loading and unloading of donations.
  • Ensure that donations are securely loaded to prevent damage while in transit. When unloading donations, follow the directions for placement of items in the store.
  • Screen donations for acceptability and usability.
  • Be prepared to courteously decline donations, as needed with supervisor approval.
  • Communicate with Store managers regarding incoming donations to determine which store receives which donations, suitable/acceptable donations, and other donation issues as they arise.
  • Drop off and pick up trucks at the repair shop, as needed.
  • Maintain the pantry drive-through area to keep the area organized, neat and safe for customers and employees.
  • Complete pre- and post-trip safety and operations checklists and documentation
  • Use navigational technology to find and follow optimal routes.
  • Assist with regular vehicle inspections, arranging maintenance when necessary.
  • Maintain and Repair vehicles, and clean, advise when service is required.
  • Inventory donated items as assigned.
  • Keep vehicles filled with gas and maintained, (fluids, keep vehicles clean.)
  • Maintain buildings in warehouses in organized and functional condition. Work with appropriate people, including officers, to keep maintenance closets, warehouse, and other storage areas clean, safe, and orderly.
  • Pick up gifts in kind donations, including food bank. Run errands as needed.
  • Seasonally, drop off and pick up Kettle’s bell ringer packages and other items for stores and other sites.
  • Must successfully complete decision driving safety test before driving the Salvation Army vehicles and annually certify as required.
  • Use protective equipment such as gloves, face mask, ear and eye protection when needed, for example when using cleaning supplies, and spraying chemicals.
  • Move trash receptacle out for trash pickup as directed return containers to storage area after pick-up.
  • Assist with miscellaneous chores, such as packing food boxes and assembling sack lunches.
  • Estimate weight of donated items and do weekly reporting on donated items.
  • Assist with custodian as needed.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.

Pay Rate

Pay: $18/hour

Working Conditions

Ability to walk, stand, bend, squat, climb, kneel and twist on an intermittent or sometimes continuous basis.  Ability to be able to lift up to 60lbs. Ability to grasp, push, pull objects such as files, file cabinets drawers and reach overhead.  Ability to operate computer, fax and telephone.

Minimum Qualifications     

  • 2 years driving experience.
  • Must maintain a current Driver's license.
