POSITION SUMMARY:
The Behavioral Health Specialist - Core Faculty is an integral member of the DHR Health Family Medicine Residency Program and supports the program's Integrated Behavioral Health (IBH) model within primary care. This role includes responsibilities in resident education and supervision, clinical behavioral health services within the Family Medicine Practice (FMP) clinic, curriculum development, scholarly activity, and program administration. The Behavioral Health Specialist works collaboratively with physicians, residents, and interdisciplinary team members to integrate behavioral health into patient care using a biopsychosocial model, with emphasis on whole-person, patient-centered care.
POSITION EDUCATION/ QUALIFICATIONS:
• Master's or Doctoral degree in Behavioral Health (Psychology, Counseling, Social Work, MFT, or related field)
• Current Texas licensure (or eligibility) in appropriate behavioral health discipline
• BLS certification within 3 months of hire
• Experience utilizing evidence-based behavioral health interventions such as CBT, ACT, or Motivational Interviewing
• Experience in integrated behavioral health or primary care setting preferred
• Experience teaching in an academic medical or residency environment preferred.

• Expertise in integrated behavioral health within primary care
• Knowledge of evidence-based interventions (CBT, Motivational Interviewing, trauma-informed care)
• Familiarity with ACGME Family Medicine Program Requirements

Responsibilities:
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Resident Education and Teaching
• Develop and deliver behavioral health education for Family Medicine residents.
• Provide lectures, workshops, and case-based teaching on motivational interviewing, trauma-informed care, crisis intervention, substance use disorders, and management of common psychiatric conditions in primary care.
• Supervise and mentor residents in clinical settings, focusing on integrating behavioral health into patient care.
• Provide direct observation and supervision of residents during behavioral health encounters.
• Facilitate interdisciplinary case conferences and behavioral health case discussions.
• Complete resident evaluations and milestone assessments using the program's evaluation platform (e.g., New Innovations).
• Participate in resident mentorship, wellness, and professional development activities.
2. Clinical Responsibilities
• Provide supervision of integrated behavioral health services within the DHR Health Family Medicine Practice (FMP) clinic.
• Oversee residents and staff during same-day behavioral health consultations through warm handoffs from physicians and residents.
• Provide direct patient care as part of continuity of care for the DHR Health FMP clinic.
• Oversee residents and staff in provision of brief behavioral interventions and short term psychotherapy appropriate for primary care.
• Guide and collaborate with the interdisciplinary care team to develop comprehensive treatment patient care plans addressing behavioral and psychosocial factors.
• Supervise residents and staff in behavioral health screening, diagnostic assessment, crisis management, and behavioral treatment planning.
• Review clinical documentation of patient encounters and consultations in the electronic health record according to institutional standards.
3. Integrated Behavioral Health Program Development
• Support development and ongoing refinement of the residency program's Integrated Behavioral Health model.
• Assist with development of screening protocols including PHQ-9, GAD-7, substance use screening, and social determinants of health assessments.
• Collaborate with clinical leadership and faculty to improve access to behavioral health services within the primary care setting.
• Participate in population health and behavioral health quality improvement initiatives.
4. Residency Program Participation
• Participate in required residency program committees including the Clinical Competency Committee (CCC) and Program Evaluation Committee (PEC).
• Attend faculty meetings and contribute to program evaluation and continuous quality improvement initiatives.
• Participate in resident recruitment and interview activities.
• Assist with accreditation preparation and ACGME compliance activities.
5. Scholarship and Academic Contribution
• Participate in scholarly activities consistent with ACGME expectations for residency faculty.
• Contribute to quality improvement initiatives related to behavioral health and integrated care.
• Present educational or scholarly work at institutional, regional, or national meetings.
• Support resident scholarly projects and quality improvement initiatives
6. Faculty Development
    • Participate in faculty development activities
      Provide behavioral health training to faculty and staff
      Maintain licensure and continuing education

    B. Working Conditions: The individual spends over 95% of his/her time in an air-conditioned environment with varying exposures to noise. There is protection from weather conditions but not necessarily from temperature changes. The position does have low exposure to malodorous, infectious body fluids from patients and some minimal exposure to noxious smells from cleansing agents.
    C. Occupational Exposure: This position has minimal to no exposure to blood, body fluids, or tissues and is an OSHA Category III (although situations can be imagined or hypothesized under which anyone, anywhere, might encounter potential exposure to body fluids). Person who performs these duties are not called upon as part of their employment to perform or assist in emergency medical care or first aid or to be potentially exposed in some other way.
