Job description

Locations: Houston, TX Atlanta, GA Wilmington, NC

We are a mission-driven outpatient behavioral health organization focused on helping individuals and families recover from substance use disorders and co-occurring mental health conditions. Our programs include Partial Hospitalization (PHP), Intensive Outpatient (IOP), and outpatient services, delivered in a structured, evidence-based setting that allows clients to stay connected to their daily lives while receiving care. Headquartered in North Carolina and expanding across multiple states, we are in a strong growth phase and focused on operational excellence, clinical integrity, and sustainable revenue cycle performance.

We are seeking a highly experienced RCM Director with deep, hands-on expertise in revenue cycle management within substance abuse treatment or behavioral health facilities. This role will own the full revenue cycle function, with a primary focus on Medicaid and out-of-network billing in a multi-state behavioral health environment. The ideal candidate comes directly from drug rehab, addiction treatment, or mental health organizations and understands the unique payer dynamics, compliance requirements, and operational realities of this space.

This is a high-impact leadership role overseeing a small billing/RCM team and external billing partners. You will be responsible for optimizing revenue capture, reducing leakage, improving reimbursement timelines, and building scalable billing workflows as the organization continues to grow.

Key Responsibilities
  • Own end-to-end revenue cycle operations across Medicaid (in-network and out-of-network) within behavioral health programs
  • Lead and manage performance of third-party billing vendors and/or internal billing staff
  • Drive improvements in A/R days, denial rates, collections, and first-pass claim acceptance
  • Oversee claim submission, follow-up, appeals, and payer engagement with a focus on Medicaid and behavioral health payers
  • Ensure accurate charge capture, documentation alignment, and coding integrity in collaboration with clinical and administrative teams
  • Utilize EMR/RCM platforms (Kipu and/or Collaborate MD strongly preferred)
  • Build and refine billing workflows, policies, and internal controls to support scaling operations
  • Provide reporting, forecasting, and revenue cycle performance insights to senior leadership
  • Stay current on payer policy changes, Medicaid updates, and behavioral health billing regulations
  • Train, mentor, and support internal billing/RCM staff where applicable
Qualifications
  • 5-10+ years of progressive RCM experience in behavioral health, substance abuse treatment, or mental health facilities (required)
  • Direct experience in drug rehab, addiction treatment, or outpatient behavioral health billing environments strongly required
  • Proven leadership experience managing RCM teams and/or third-party billing vendors
  • Deep expertise in Medicaid billing (network and out-of-network) within behavioral health settings
  • Strong command of denial management, appeals, A/R optimization, and payer reimbursement strategies
  • Experience with Kipu and/or Collaborate MD strongly preferred
  • Exposure to revenue cycle analytics, automation, or AI-driven billing tools is a plus
  • Strong analytical and operational problem-solving skills
  • Ability to operate in a fast-growing, multi-site environment
Compensation & Benefits
  • Base salary: $120,000 - $150,000 depending on experience and depth of behavioral health RCM expertise.
  • Candidates with extensive experience in substance abuse or behavioral health RCM, particularly those who have owned Medicaid-heavy revenue cycles and managed vendors or internal billing teams, will be positioned at the higher end of the range.
  • Standard benefits package provided. Please note: 401(k) is not currently offered.

This is an opportunity to step into a true ownership role in a growing behavioral health organization where revenue cycle performance directly supports access to life-changing care.
