Assistant Director of Nursing (RN - ADON) – Behavioral Health

Location: New Baltimore, MI

Position Type: Full-Time, Permanent Placement

Schedule: Day Shift (8-Hour Shifts, Monday – Friday) | On-Call Every Other Weekend (EOW)

Compensation: $110,000 – $125,000 / year (Based on Experience)

Sign-On Bonus: $7,500

Position Overview

We are seeking a seasoned, dedicated Registered Nurse - Assistant Director of Nursing (ADON) to join our leadership team in New Baltimore, MI. This is a full-time, permanent direct-care leadership opportunity for an experienced nurse manager who thrives in a unionized healthcare environment and can provide long-term stability and operational excellence.

In this role, you will work closely with the Director of Nursing (DON) and Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) to direct, plan, coordinate, and supervise the daily operations of nursing and behavioral health services. We are looking for a confident leader with a strong track record of managing 15+ direct reports, implementing process improvements, driving accountability, and establishing credibility with staff and key stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities
  • Operational Leadership: Assist the DON/CNO in managing daily nursing operations, evaluating service needs, and managing staffing requirements to ensure optimal, safe patient care. Oversee the department in the DON's absence.
  • Team Management & Development: Lead, mentor, and supervise 15+ direct reports. Oversee hiring, onboarding, staff development, performance management, and employee engagement in a union setting.
  • Quality & Process Improvement: Drive clinical excellence, implement workflow enhancements, and improve department performance and outcomes while ensuring strict compliance with federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Patient Care & Safety: Model exceptional customer service and patient-centered care. Evaluate physical, biopsychosocial, developmental, and cultural needs of behavioral health patients. Provide direct patient care as needed.
  • Crisis Management & Compliance: Intervene in crisis situations, conduct incident investigations, ensure accurate nursing documentation, and maintain regulatory standards across all shifts.
  • Resource & Budget Support: Collaborate with leadership on budget management and efficient resource utilization.
Key Qualifications & Experience
  • Licensure: Active Registered Nurse (RN) license in the State of Michigan (or multi-state compact license) required.
  • Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (BSN) or higher strongly preferred.
  • Leadership Experience:
    • Minimum 1 year of progressive nursing leadership or management experience required (Prior Nurse Manager experience strongly preferred; charge nurse experience alone is not sufficient).
    • Proven experience managing 15+ direct reports and larger care teams.
    • Experience working in a unionized healthcare environment is strongly preferred.
  • Clinical Experience:
    • Minimum 2 years of Registered Nurse (RN) experience required (5+ years preferred).
    • Minimum 1 year of experience in a behavioral health, psychiatric, or addiction recovery environment (inpatient or outpatient) required.
  • Certifications:
    • CPR certification required.
    • De-escalation/restraint certification required (training offered and provided upon hire).
    • First Aid certification as required by state/facility standards.
