Position Description
Reports To: Foreman / Superintendent
Position Summary
The Grading Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of a motor grader to spread and level earth, aggregate, or other materials in the construction, repair, or maintenance of roads and other projects. This role requires precision grading skills to achieve specified slopes and smoothness, as well as a commitment to safety, quality, and productivity. The Grader Operator works closely with site supervisors and grade checkers to ensure work meets design and project requirements.
Key Duties & Responsibilities
  • Operate a motor grader to cut, spread, and level materials according to grade specifications and project plans.
  • Read and interpret grade stakes, blueprints, and instructions from the foreman or grade checker.
  • Make fine grading adjustments to achieve proper elevation, slope, and smoothness.
  • Perform pre-shift and post-shift inspections of equipment, checking fluid levels, blade condition, and mechanical systems.
  • Maintain control of equipment in varying terrain and site conditions.
  • Coordinate work with other equipment operators and ground crews to ensure efficient site operations.
  • Keep equipment clean, fueled, and in proper working condition.
  • Report mechanical issues or maintenance needs to the foreman or maintenance personnel promptly.
  • Perform basic preventive maintenance, such as greasing fittings and replacing minor components.
  • Follow all company safety policies, OSHA regulations, and project-specific safety requirements.
  • Assist in other construction tasks when needed, including manual labor.

Position Requirements
Qualifications & Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • 2+ years of experience operating a motor grader in construction or related work preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of grading principles, slope control, and equipment operation techniques.
  • Ability to read and interpret grade stakes, blueprints, and project specifications.
  • Mechanical aptitude to perform basic maintenance and troubleshooting.
  • Excellent situational awareness and attention to detail.
  • Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug screen.

Physical Requirements & Work Environment
  • Work is performed outdoors in all weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and dust.
  • Must be able to climb onto and off heavy equipment safely.
  • Ability to sit for extended periods while operating the grader.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. and perform manual labor when required.
  • Frequent bending, kneeling, and standing.
  • Noise levels may be loud and require the use of hearing protection.
