Job description

Licensed Practical Nurse

This employee is responsible for meeting students' medical and physical needs in the classroom and is also responsible for material preparation and clerical tasks. Reports to: Principal or Director of Porter County Career Center Duties of this position include but are not limited to:

  • Administering prescribed medication.
  • Performing prescribed medical treatments.
  • Keeping records of medical procedures.
  • Coordinating medical information between the parent, the school, and the medical provider.
  • Assisting students with any health related needs including self-care needs such as hygiene, blood glucose monitoring and nutrition.
  • Preparing materials for the teacher.
  • Assisting with data collection.
  • Work with teachers regarding classroom safety plans.
  • Work with home school nurses on healthcare issues/plans for students attending career center.
  • Assisting in assembling and putting up materials on bulletin boards and in keeping such displays current.
  • Supervising pupils during the breaks/passing periods as needed.
  • Assisting teachers in supervising pupils while they are on the school grounds. This would involve duty before school, during school, and during intermission periods.
  • Collecting materials needed by the teacher in presenting units of work.
  • Assembling, adjusting, and maintaining equipment used in the classroom as needed.
  • Attending workshops to improve skills necessary to deal with students in this program, including maintaining CPR and First Aid certification.
  • Monitoring students during community based instruction, on and off campus sites under the direction of an instructional staff member.
  • Monitor Field Trip information for staff.
  • Assist with Main office responsibilities when necessary.
  • Provide coverage at SELF Building when necessary.
  • Performing other duties as assigned.
  • When available, the RN will assist with data support.
  • The LPN(ESE) will be under the supervision of the registered nurse assigned to that school for all medical procedures. If position is filled with a RN, they will be the registered nurse on staff.

Required Qualifications:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Must be a high school graduate or equivalent (SACS requirement).
  • Possess the ability to relate to children.
  • At minimum, Licensed Practical Nurse, licensed by the Indiana Board of Nursing.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Additional college training coursework in area related fields.
  • Computer and audiovisual skills.
  • Experience in working with children/adolescents.
  • Certification in CPR and First Aid.
