Medical Laboratory Scientist II – Blood Bank

Location: Chapel Hill, NC
Job Type: Full-Time | Direct Hire
Schedule: Friday–Monday | 9:30 PM–7:30 AM
Pay: $26.85–$45.04/hour, based on experience and internal equity

Job Summary

Medical Laboratory Scientist II – Blood Bank to join its Transfusion Medicine Service. This role performs advanced blood bank testing, troubleshooting, quality control, and transfusion-related procedures while working independently in a clinical laboratory setting.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform advanced laboratory and blood bank testing accurately and efficiently.
  • Perform Type & Screen, Antibody Identification, DAT, Eluate, Phenotyping, and Antigen Typing.
  • Perform blood product modifications, including syringe aliquots and irradiation.
  • Follow Massive Transfusion Protocol (MTP) and emergency release procedures.
  • Troubleshoot equipment, specimens, test results, and workflow issues.
  • Perform quality control and proficiency testing and monitor testing accuracy.
  • Prepare reagents and control materials and monitor laboratory supplies.
  • Serve as a technical resource and assist with training new employees and learners.
  • Participate in special projects and other laboratory duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in clinical/medical laboratory science, Chemical Science, or Biological Science OR associate’s degree in clinical/medical laboratory technology or related field.
  • MT/MLS (ASCP or AMT) certification required for applicable degree pathway.
  • MLT (ASCP or AMT) certification may be considered with qualifying education and experience.
  • Strong hands-on Blood Bank/Transfusion Medicine experience required.
  • MLT candidates must have actual blood bank experience in a 500+ bed hospital/facility.
  • Ability to work independently and demonstrate strong critical-thinking and problem-solving skills.
