Sterile Processing Technician
$2,000 Sign-On Bonus | 1 Year SPD Experience Required

Location: Baystate Medical Center, Springfield, MA
Schedule: 3rd shift - 10pm-6:30am

Position Summary
The Sterile Processing Technician is responsible for performing all aspects of sterile processing, including decontamination, inspection, assembly, and sterilization of surgical instruments and equipment in accordance with hospital protocols and manufacturer instructions.
This role requires strong attention to detail, knowledge of infection control and sterilization standards, and the ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced healthcare environment.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Decontaminate, clean, inspect, assemble, and sterilize surgical instruments and equipment.
  • Operate sterilization equipment including steam, ethylene oxide, and low-temperature gas plasma sterilizers.
  • Ensure adherence to all sterilization parameters and maintain accurate documentation.
  • Perform quality checks including biological and chemical monitoring.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment.
  • Inspect sterile goods for package integrity and expiration dates.
  • Communicate effectively with nurses, physicians, and other healthcare professionals.
  • Perform additional clerical and documentation tasks as needed.

Certification Requirement: Must have CBSPD and/or HSPA certification at the time of hire.
Qualifications and Career Ladder
Baystate Health offers a structured career ladder for Sterile Processing Technicians. Placement within the ladder will be based on experience and certification.
Level I
  • High School Diploma or GED required
  • Experience in sterile processing or perioperative environment preferred

Level II
  • High School Diploma or GED required
  • Minimum 1 year of experience in sterile processing or as an entry-level surgical technician

Level III
  • High School Diploma or GED required
  • Certified Sterile Processing Technician (CBSPD and/or HSPA) with a minimum of 2 years of experience

Level IV
  • High School Diploma or GED required
  • 3-5 years of experience in sterile processing with knowledge of operating room instrumentation with one year at Baystate
