Battery Modeling Engineer information

What is a battery modeling engineer?

Battery Modeling Engineers are professionals who design, develop, and optimize mathematical models that simulate the behavior and performance of batteries. They use these models to predict battery life, efficiency, safety, and performance under various conditions, helping to improve battery technology for applications like electric vehicles, consumer electronics, and renewable energy storage. Their work often involves collaborating with chemists, electrical engineers, and software developers to create accurate simulations and guide the development of new battery technologies.

How does a battery modeling engineer typically collaborate with cross-functional teams in the development process?

Battery Modeling Engineers frequently work alongside electrochemists, hardware engineers, and data scientists to develop and refine battery systems. They translate experimental data and design requirements into simulation models, ensuring alignment between theoretical predictions and real-world performance. Effective communication and regular meetings are essential, as Battery Modeling Engineers often provide critical insights that inform design decisions, troubleshooting, and optimization of battery performance. This collaborative environment fosters innovation and helps accelerate product development cycles.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a battery modeling engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Battery Modeling Engineer, you need a strong background in electrochemistry, physics, and advanced mathematics, typically supported by a degree in engineering or a related field. Proficiency in simulation tools such as COMSOL Multiphysics, MATLAB, and Python, along with familiarity with battery management systems, is essential. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication help you collaborate and solve complex battery performance challenges. These skills are crucial for designing accurate models that drive innovation and efficiency in battery technology.

What is the difference between Battery Modeling Engineer vs Battery Test Engineer?

AspectBattery Modeling EngineerBattery Test Engineer
CredentialsDegree in Electrical, Mechanical, or Chemical Engineering; knowledge of modeling softwareDegree in Electrical, Mechanical, or Chemical Engineering; experience with testing equipment
Work EnvironmentDesign labs, simulation environments, R&D departmentsTesting labs, quality assurance, product validation
Industry UsageBattery development, simulation, and optimizationProduct testing, validation, and quality control
Search/Comparison IntentFocus on modeling and simulation skillsFocus on testing procedures and validation processes

The main difference between a Battery Modeling Engineer and a Battery Test Engineer lies in their focus areas. The Battery Modeling Engineer specializes in creating simulations and models to predict battery performance, while the Battery Test Engineer conducts physical tests to validate battery quality and safety. Both roles are essential in battery development but serve different stages of the product lifecycle.

Job description

Description
POSITION SUMMARY: The Will-Burt Company is the global market-leading OEM of telescoping mast products and integrated systems serving defense, first responder, commercial, and industrial markets worldwide. We are seeking a Senior Electrical Engineer to join a highly capable and collaborative engineering team focused on designing and integrating rugged electro-mechanical systems used in demanding, real-world environments.
This role offers the opportunity to design and support advanced control systems and electrical architecture for complex, vehicle-mounted and trailer-based systems-such as telescoping masts integrated with power management, radar, surveillance, and communications payloads. The U.S. engineering organization consists of approximately 22 engineers, including two Senior Electrical Engineers, and collaborates closely with international teams in the U.K. and Germany
Requirements
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Control System Design
  • Design robust control systems capable of operating in harsh, outdoor, off-road vehicle environments
  • Select and integrate off-the-shelf controllers, sensors, cable assemblies, and peripherals with in-house designed printed circuit boards
  • Develop scalable control solutions adaptable across a wide range of global applications and programs
  • Design, build, or oversee prototype hardware for qualification testing and customer evaluations
  • Ensure designs address electrical noise, shielding, EMI/EMC emissions, and susceptibility appropriate to the application environment

Controls Programming
  • Develop and maintain embedded and control software for new and legacy products
  • Implement and program control systems using J1939 CANbus and CANopen protocols; support legacy RS-485 systems as needed
  • Program using C, CODESYS, and other appropriate environments
  • Configure and support programmable devices including vehicle displays, controllers (IFM), CAN peripherals, and microprocessors
  • Oversee software testing to ensure robustness

System Integration & Customer Support
  • Lead electrical system design to support customer integrations, including powering and controlling Will-Burt equipment and interfacing with customer payloads
  • Support a wide range of payloads, from simple electrical loads to advanced radar and surveillance systems
  • Design and support power systems including generators, shore power, solar/wind systems, and battery management solutions
  • Contribute to camera and mobile DVR system integrations, including HD-SDI, IR, and IP camera technologies
  • Participate in business capture and proposal support for new programs and customer opportunities

Manufacturing & Operations Support
  • Assist in diagnosing and resolving customer field issues and production floor challenges
  • Provide technical support for integrated peripherals such as cameras and voltage detection systems
  • Perform or support circuit board-level troubleshooting when required
  • Collaborate with manufacturing to ensure designs support efficient assembly and production processes
  • Specify replacement components for obsolete or hard-to-source parts
  • Ensure accurate documentation and execution of engineering changes

Product Ownership & Technical Leadership
  • Serve as a product expert and technical resource for cross-functional teams
  • Ensure system designs meet applicable regulatory and industry standards, including CE, UKCA, MIL-STD-810, MIL-STD-461, NFPA, ANSI, and others
