Manager, Battery Energy Storage Operations

Headquartered in Indianapolis, Indiana, Wabash Valley Power is a not-for-profit electric cooperative and wholesale provider of reliable, affordable electricity to our 21 electric distribution member cooperatives. Job Description

Are you passionate about shaping the future of energy? Join WVPA and play a pivotal role in operating and expanding a growing portfolio of utilityโ€‘scale Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) that support grid reliability, energy resiliency, and the transition to a smarter energy future.

As the Manager of Battery Energy Storage Operations, youโ€™ll lead the safe, reliable, and efficient performance of WVPAโ€™s battery assets while overseeing maintenance programs, operational technology, vendor partnerships, and a team of skilled Battery Energy Storage Technicians. Youโ€™ll serve as the organizationโ€™s subject matter expert on battery operations, collaborating with internal and external stakeholders to maximize asset performance and deliver longโ€‘term value.

This is a unique opportunity to influence the future of energy storage by supporting new battery deployments, emerging technologies, grid modernization initiatives, and strategic energy projects across the region.

  • Lead the operation and maintenance of utilityโ€‘scale battery energy storage assets
  • Drive reliability, safety, and performance across the battery portfolio
  • Oversee maintenance programs, SCADA systems, and operational technology
  • Manage contractors, vendors, and key service partnerships
  • Develop and mentor a highโ€‘performing technical team
  • Support new battery projects, commissioning activities, and future energy storage expansion
  • Contribute to WVPAโ€™s longโ€‘term strategy for grid reliability and energy innovation

Qualifications Education & Experience
  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, Operations Management, Energy Systems, Industrial Technology, or related field.
  • Minimum five (5) years of experience in utility operations, electric generation, battery storage, power systems, substation operations, industrial maintenance, or a related field.
  • Minimum three (3) years of supervisory or leadership experience preferred.
  • Experience with battery energy storage systems, power electronics, SCADA systems, substations, generation facilities, or utility assets preferred.
  • Experience managing contractors, vendors, maintenance programs, and safety initiatives preferred.
Preferred Certifications
  • PMP, CMRP, NETA, OSHA, NFPA 70E, NABCEP Energy Storage, or equivalent certifications are a plus.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred but not required.
Additional Information Travel Requirements
  • Ability to travel throughout the WVPA service territory and to battery project sites as needed.
  • Occasional overnight travel for training, equipment inspections, vendor meetings, and industry conferences.
  • Valid drivers license required
