What is a batch manager?

Batch Managers are professionals responsible for overseeing and coordinating the processing of batch jobs within IT systems, manufacturing, or production environments. They ensure that tasks are executed in the correct sequence, monitor performance, troubleshoot errors, and optimize workflows for efficiency. Batch Managers often use specialized software to schedule and automate repetitive jobs, ensuring timely completion and compliance with operational standards. Their role is crucial in industries that rely on large-scale, repetitive processing to maintain smooth and reliable operations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a batch manager?

To thrive as a Batch Manager, you need expertise in batch processing concepts, scheduling, and workload automation, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with job scheduling tools like Control-M, Autosys, or IBM Workload Scheduler, as well as experience with scripting languages, is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication are important soft skills for managing complex workflows and collaborating with IT teams. These competencies ensure efficient batch operations, minimize downtime, and support critical business processes reliant on timely data processing.

What are some common challenges batch managers face when coordinating large-scale batch processing operations?

Batch Managers often encounter challenges such as managing overlapping workloads, troubleshooting process disruptions, and ensuring timely completion of batch cycles. Coordinating between operations, IT, and quality assurance teams is essential to resolve issues quickly and maintain efficiency. Adapting to changing production schedules and maintaining up-to-date documentation are also key aspects of the role. Effective communication and a proactive approach to problem-solving can help Batch Managers navigate these challenges successfully.

About the Role

We are seeking an experienced and highly motivated Batch Plant Manager to oversee the daily operations of our wet mix concrete batch plant, specializing in the production of architectural and structural self‑consolidating concrete (SCC) mixes. This is a hands‑on leadership role requiring deep technical knowledge of concrete mix design, plant operations, and equipment maintenance.

Compensation
  • Competitive salary commensurate with experience.
  • Health, dental, and vision benefits.
  • Paid time off and company holidays.
Key Responsibilities Plant Operations
  • Manage all aspects of daily wet mix batch plant operations, ensuring consistent and accurate production of architectural and structural SCC mixes.
  • Oversee batching accuracy, mix design compliance, and quality control procedures for all produced concrete.
  • Maintain and enforce strict adherence to mix design specifications, ensuring slump flow, viscosity, and aggregate gradation meet project requirements.
  • Monitor aggregate moisture content and make real‑time mix adjustments to maintain SCC performance standards.
  • Coordinate production schedules to align with project delivery timelines and volume demands.
  • Maintain detailed batch records, production logs, and quality control documentation.
  • Ensure compliance with ACI, ASTM, and applicable industry standards for SCC production.
Equipment Maintenance
  • Oversee preventive and corrective maintenance programs for all rolling equipment associated with batch plant operations, including:
  • Front‑end loaders (aggregate handling, stockpile management)
  • Front‑discharge ready mix trucks (drum maintenance, hydraulic systems, chutes, water tanks)
  • Schedule and coordinate routine servicing, inspections, and repairs -- minimizing downtime and maximizing equipment availability.
  • Maintain accurate maintenance records, service logs, and parts inventories.
  • Work with outside vendors and equipment dealers for warranty repairs, parts procurement, and specialized service needs.
  • Conduct pre‑shift and post‑shift equipment inspections and enforce operator accountability.
Qualifications & Requirements Required
  • 5+ years of experience in concrete batch plant operations, with direct supervisory or management responsibility.
  • Demonstrated experience producing self‑consolidating concrete (SCC) -- both architectural and structural applications.
  • Working knowledge of wet mix batching systems (Command Alkon, VERIFI, or equivalent preferred).
  • Hands‑on mechanical aptitude with proven ability to maintain and troubleshoot front loaders and front‑discharge ready mix trucks.
  • Strong understanding of concrete mix design principles, admixture systems, and raw material quality control.
  • Familiarity with ACI 237R (Self‑Consolidating Concrete) guidelines and ASTM C1611 / C1621 test methods.
Preferred
  • ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician certification (Grade I or higher).
  • Experience with architectural SCC for precast or tilt‑up applications where finish quality is critical.
  • OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification.
