Head 8th Grade Girls Basketball Coach

Position Title: Head 8th Grade Girls Basketball Coach
 Reports To: Athletic Director and Head Girls Basketball Coach
 Season: Oct- Dec. 
 Classification: Coaching Stipend Position


Position Summary

The Head 8th Grade Girls Basketball Coach is responsible for leading the 8th grade girls basketball program by fostering skill development, teamwork, sportsmanship, and a positive student-athlete experience. The coach serves as a key member of the girls basketball program, preparing student-athletes for success at the high school level while supporting the overall philosophy and vision established by the Head Girls Basketball Coach.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Program Leadership

  • Plan and conduct safe, organized, and engaging daily practices.
  • Teach the fundamental skills, rules, strategies, and techniques of basketball.
  • Promote good sportsmanship, teamwork, accountability, and respect.
  • Create a positive and inclusive environment that encourages student participation and growth.
  • Monitor the academic and behavioral progress of student-athletes and reinforce the importance of being a student first.

Program Alignment

  • Support and implement the philosophy, expectations, and style of play established by the Head Girls Basketball Coach.
  • Communicate regularly with the Head Girls Basketball Coach regarding player development and program needs.
  • Prepare athletes for a successful transition into the high school basketball program.
  • Attend coaches' meetings and collaborate with other members of the girls basketball coaching staff.

Game Management

  • Develop game plans that emphasize player development and team success.
  • Supervise athletes during contests, practices, team travel, and other team activities.
  • Demonstrate professionalism and composure while interacting with officials, opponents, parents, and spectators.
  • Ensure all athletes receive appropriate instruction and opportunities for development.

Communication

  • Maintain open, positive communication with student-athletes, parents, school staff, and the athletic department.
  • Communicate schedules, expectations, and team information in a timely manner.
  • Address concerns professionally and in accordance with district policies.

Safety and Compliance

  • Maintain current required certifications, including First Aid/CPR (if required by the district), concussion training, heat illness prevention, and all OSAA or district-required coaching certifications.
  • Enforce district, league, and OSAA policies and procedures.
  • Inspect facilities and equipment to ensure a safe practice and competition environment.
  • Report injuries, accidents, and concerns according to district procedures.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Inventory and care for uniforms, equipment, and supplies.
  • Assist with youth basketball development opportunities when appropriate.
  • Represent the school and athletic program in a positive and professional manner.
  • Perform other coaching-related duties as assigned by the Athletic Director or Head Girls Basketball Coach.

Qualifications

  • Previous basketball playing and/or coaching experience preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to teach and motivate middle school student-athletes.
  • Strong leadership, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Ability to build positive relationships with students, families, staff, and community members.
  • Commitment to developing student-athletes both on and off the court.
  • Must meet all district hiring requirements, including background check and coaching certification requirements.
