Job description

Purpose:
The Basketball Coach is responsible for leading and developing a middle school basketball program for youth ages 9–14. The coach will provide instruction in basketball fundamentals while creating a safe, positive, and encouraging environment that promotes teamwork, sportsmanship, discipline, confidence, and personal growth.
Required Qualifications:
  • Previous basketball coaching or playing experience preferred.
  • Experience working with youth ages 9–14 preferred.
  • Strong communication, leadership, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with children of different skill levels.
  • Ability to create a positive, inclusive, and respectful environment.
  • CPR/First Aid certification preferred or willingness to obtain certification.
  • Must be dependable, responsible, and able to follow all youth program and facility safety policies.
Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Plan and lead basketball practices appropriate for youth ages 9–14.
  • Teach fundamental basketball skills, including dribbling, passing, shooting, defense, rebounding, and footwork.
  • Develop and lead age-appropriate drills, activities, and games.
  • Encourage teamwork, sportsmanship, respect, and positive behavior.
  • Provide constructive feedback and support to help participants improve their skills.
  • Maintain a safe, organized, and welcoming practice environment.
  • Monitor participants and address safety or behavioral concerns appropriately.
  • Serve as a positive role model for participants.
  • Communicate professionally with parents/guardians and program staff.
  • Follow all Riverdale Y policies, procedures, and safety guidelines.
  • Assist with maintaining equipment and ensuring the basketball area is clean and organized.
