Job description

Job Title: PhlebotomistJob Description

This Phlebotomist role focuses on performing high-quality blood draws and specimen collection while supporting smooth laboratory workflows in a fast-paced clinical environment. You will collect, process, label, and store patient specimens according to established procedures, ensure accurate documentation, and assist with troubleshooting and training as needed. The position requires strong attention to detail, clear communication with patients and clinical staff, and the ability to work independently while maintaining strict compliance with safety and regulatory standards.

Responsibilities
  • Perform blood draws and venipuncture procedures using straight needles and butterfly needles in a safe, efficient, and patient-centered manner.
  • Clearly and courteously explain the venipuncture and other specimen collection processes (such as urine or fecal specimens) to patients before performing procedures.
  • Collect and store specimens according to established procedures and protocols to maintain specimen integrity.
  • Label specimen tubes accurately and match laboratory requisition forms to specimens to ensure 100% accuracy.
  • Centrifuge, split, freeze, and otherwise process specimens as required by specific test orders.
  • Package specimens for transport, following all required procedures to preserve specimen quality during transit.
  • Store specimen samples at the required temperature and place them in appropriate collection containers or tubes as outlined by protocol.
  • Update patient information accurately in the system and perform data entry related to specimen collection and processing.
  • Record maintenance data and perform decontamination tasks in accordance with laboratory procedures.
  • Understand and fully interpret physicians’ orders to ensure proper specimen collection and handling.
  • Check all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against orders or scripts to confirm accuracy before processing.
  • Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and all applicable safety standards in the handling of biological samples and laboratory equipment.
  • Attend annual department trainings and maintain current knowledge of procedures, safety requirements, and best practices.
  • Answer telephone calls, provide laboratory result information as appropriate, and respond to inquiries in a professional manner.
  • Assist with troubleshooting workflow issues and make recommendations to improve efficiency and accuracy within the laboratory or collection environment.
  • Support training efforts by demonstrating proper phlebotomy and specimen handling techniques as needed.
Essential Skills
  • At least 6 months of experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced environment, with the ability to draw and process specimens independently.
  • Proficiency in performing blood draws and venipuncture using straight needles and butterfly needles.
  • Demonstrated experience performing blood draws on pediatric through geriatric patient populations.
  • High school diploma or completion of a General Education Diploma (GED).
  • Ability to collect, label, process, and store specimens in accordance with established laboratory procedures.
  • Strong attention to detail when matching laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verifying test orders.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite for basic documentation and communication tasks.
  • Skill in specimen handling, including sample preparation, sample storage, and specimen management.
  • Ability to operate and use a centrifuge safely and effectively.
  • Knowledge of OSHA and DEP regulations related to laboratory safety and specimen handling.
  • Comfort working in a fast-paced clinical or laboratory setting while maintaining accuracy and quality.
  • Effective verbal communication skills to explain procedures to patients and to interact with clinical staff.
  • Basic data entry skills for recording patient and specimen information accurately.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Experience working in laboratory, blood bank, biobank, or similar biological sample environments.

Work Environment

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $22.24 - $26.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
