Job description

The Emergency Department (ED) Registered Nurse (RN) at Sentara Leigh Hospital delivers fast-paced, high-acuity care to patients presenting with a wide range of emergent medical needs. Working in a collaborative, award-winning environment, the ED RN utilizes rapid assessment and critical thinking to stabilize patients, assist providers, and champion patient safety.
Key Responsibilities
  • Patient Triage & Assessment: Perform rapid, accurate, and ongoing clinical assessments of patients presenting to the emergency department.
  • Direct Patient Care: Implement personalized care plans, administer medications/treatments, and document all outcomes accurately in the EMR.
  • Life-Saving Interventions: Assist with emergency procedures, crisis management, and coordinate care for urgent cases, including supporting the Nightingale Regional Air Ambulance landing pad.
  • Compliance & Safety: Adhere strictly to EMTALA regulations, HIPAA, and infection prevention standards.
  • Family Support: Act as a patient advocate, educating patients and families about health conditions, procedures, and discharge plans.
Qualifications & Requirements
  • Education: Graduate of an accredited Registered Nursing program.
  • License: Current, active Registered Nurse (RN) license to practice in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
  • Experience: Minimum of 1–2 years of recent acute care or emergency nursing experience.
  • Certifications: Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS), and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) required. (TNCC, ENPC, and CEN are highly preferred).
  • Skills: Excellent communication, crisis de-escalation, and adaptability in high-stress, unpredictable situations.
