Duties
Under the direction of the Director of Campus Operations, the Supervisor of Roads and Grounds serves as head landscaper, and working supervisor of Grounds and Vehicle Maintenance personnel. The Supervisor of Roads and Grounds coordinates the maintenance activities of campus landscaping, parking areas, secondary roads, walkways, traffic control signs, athletic fields, snow removal, trash and rubbish removal, and maintenance of college vehicles.
The Supervisor of Roads and Grounds is dedicated to the learning college concepts by developing programs and facilitating activities that promote student success and lifelong learning.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
1. Lead and assist Grounds crew in providing attractive and clean campus grounds, creating a campus environment that is comfortable and welcoming to students, staff and visitors.
2. Schedule, assign and supervise Grounds and Vehicle Maintenance personnel engaged in:
- landscaping, pruning, vegetation control and plantings
- maintenance and repair of walkways, secondary roads and athletic fields
- trash and rubbish removal
- snow removal and maintenance of college vehicles
3. Plan and manage the maintenance of athletic fields within established budgetary limits, including game fields, practice fields, softball, baseball, and tennis courts.
4. Establish work schedules and inspect completed work to ensure conformance to specifications and standards.
5. In conjunction with the Director of Campus Operations, develop campus ornamental landscape plans and provide for maintenance, replacement and new plantings on campus.
6. Inspect campus and observe activities for potentially unsafe conditions, take appropriate action to correct condition and report safety hazard to Director.
7. Maintain inventory of tools, supplies and equipment and meet with vendors regarding product specifications and new products
8. Operate campus vehicles and equipment as necessary to assist with the completion of projects
9. Train employees on the use of equipment; and train and enforce work and safety regulations.
10. Assist in the investigation of accidents involving roads and grounds personnel; prepare accident, injury, and damage reports.
11. Coordinates contractors working on Roads & Grounds projects. Assists with the solicitation of project quotes.
12. Supervisory responsibilities and other duties as assigned.
Education/Experience
  • Associate's degree or higher (in horticulture, landscape architecture, or related field) AND/OR (10) years of experience in grounds/nursery including lawn maintenance chemicals and equipment required.
  • Three (3) or more years supervisory experience required, preferably grounds-related.
  • Current Illinois Pesticide License (applicator-turf) and a valid driver's license to operate light and medium trucks.
  • Bachelor's degree in a related field preferred.

Qualifications
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel. The employee frequently is required to stand, walk, sit, reach with hands and arms, and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, and ability to adjust focus. In addition to the qualifications above, the Supervisor of Roads and Grounds must have the ability to lead, supervise and assist the Grounds crew in providing attractive and clean campus grounds, creating a campus environment that is comfortable and welcoming to students, staff and visitors.
