APPARATUS ROOM BARISTA POSITION PROFILE
Reports to Director of Food and Beverage - position is non-exempt

The Detroit Foundation Hotel has transformed the historic Detroit Fire Department Headquarters into a 100 room independent hotel that adds another piece to the ongoing Detroit renaissance puzzle. The hotel draws on the Motor- City's unparalleled past while proactively moving the city to its next incarnation as a national cultural, business and artistic touch- point. Featuring an inviting ground- floor restaurant, The Apparatus Room, the hotel partners with local distillers, brewers, farmer s and other edible sundry purveyors to deliver and authentic Detroit experience.

WHO YOU ARE
Your past experiences have led you to understand that there is an art + science to the how and what a hospitality operations professional is responsible for. You are what your friends might affectionately call a “coffee nerd”. You inhale deeply every time you pass a coffee shop taking in the rich aroma. Nothing pleases you quite as much as getting the perfect crema on your espresso pulls. Your passion for coffee is only rivaled by your passion for hospitality. You love your place in the community- you get the neighborhood up and running. Without you businesses just wouldn’t be buzzing and that is something that you take pride in.
THE ROLE
Baristas report to the F amp;B Director and F amp;B managers/supervisors and works in a team environment with other servers, server assistants, bartenders, barbacks, dishwashers, cooks, and chefs. It is critical the person in this position possess a strong background in the art of coffee and tea making.
As a barista, you will be responsible for creating memorable guest experiences. Your interactions may be brief ones, but your guests know they can count on you to get their day started with a smile.
All of our service team members are expected to be reliable and responsible. You will arrive changed, polished and mentally ready to work on time. We put an emphasis on treating all of our team members just like we treat our guests- giving a smile, a helping hand, and a willingness to jump in to assist in any situation.
You will also actively develop trusting and transparent relationships with your peers on the service team and other associates of the hotel. As a team member within Aparium Hotel Group you will work with a phenomenal group of peers who insist that you are collaborative, humble, experienced and open-minded – no egos are allowed
WHAT YOU WILL DO
  • Uphold and role model the company’s principles of People, Place and Character; and ensure you are always modeling the way of our values that drive collaboration, intuition and translocal hospitality
  • Use recipes and accurate measures for consistent products
  • Ensure money is accurately accounted for
  • Create lasting impressions on all guests
  • Work in an organized and clean fashion with the utmost respect for your guests, peers, equipment, and workspace
  • Demonstrate a sense of urgency to provide an amazing guest experience
  • Use your product knowledge to enhance guest experiences with add-ons
  • Pass on your extensive knowledge of the coffee world to your guests who are interested
  • Participate in daily line ups and quarterly all staff meetings to further develop ideas and objectives with the service team while simultaneously providing constructive feedback and strategizing to overcome and correct any previously missed opportunities
  • Observe conditions of all physical facilities and relay any challenges to the F amp;B Director, F amp;B manager/supervisors to make corrections and improvements as needed
  • Communicate effectively with the chef on the line to ensure all guests get their food as ordered in timely fashion
  • Communicate effectively with servers to ensure all guests get their beverages as ordered in a timely fashion

WHAT YOU WILL NEED
  • Minimum of 1 (one) year experience as a barista in either a coffee shop, free standing or hotel restaurant.
  • High school diploma or GED required
  • Ability to have TIPS or Food Safe certification from a reputable organization
  • Ability to calculate basic math principles to meet proper menu ingredients and perform inventory
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment for extended periods of time to meet high volume business
  • Ability to lift, balance and carry up to 25lbs to transport dry goods inventory, equipment, etc.
  • Ability to lift, balance and carry (with assistance) up to 100lbs to transport dry goods inventory, equipment, etc.
  • Adaptable interpersonal skills to communication and address all employee levels of the hotel
  • Professional proficiency of the English language in reading, writing and verbal communication
