What is a barista cafe server?

Barista Cafe Servers are professionals who prepare and serve coffee, espresso drinks, teas, and other beverages in cafes or coffee shops. They also handle customer orders, operate coffee-making equipment, and may serve pastries or light snacks. In addition to making drinks, Barista Cafe Servers are responsible for maintaining a clean workspace, handling payments, and providing friendly customer service. Their role often requires knowledge of different coffee beans, brewing methods, and menu offerings to help customers make informed choices.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a barista cafe server, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Barista Cafe Server, you need strong customer service skills, knowledge of coffee preparation, and basic food safety awareness, often supported by on-the-job training or a food handler certificate. Familiarity with espresso machines, point-of-sale (POS) systems, and inventory management tools is commonly required. Outstanding communication, multitasking, and a friendly demeanor help create a welcoming environment and build customer loyalty. These skills are essential for ensuring efficient service, product quality, and a positive customer experience in a fast-paced café setting.

What are some typical challenges a barista cafe server might face during busy hours, and how can they effectively manage them?

During peak times, Barista Cafe Servers often encounter long lines and high-pressure situations as they juggle drink orders, food preparation, and customer service. Staying organized, communicating clearly with team members, and prioritizing tasks are essential for maintaining efficiency and customer satisfaction. It's also helpful to remain calm under pressure, anticipate customer needs, and double-check orders to avoid mistakes. With experience, many Baristas develop strategies for multitasking and teamwork, which can make busy periods more manageable and rewarding.

Job description

Café Staff (Hybrid Café + Gym Role)
The Front Climbing Club - Salt Lake City & South Main
Ready to Fuel the Send?
Got a passion for great food and good vibes? Come be the heartbeat of Rumsy's - our café at the base of the wall - and pitch in on the gym floor when the crew needs you. If you thrive on variety, love feeding a hungry crowd, and want to be part of something more than just a job, keep reading.
About The Front
The Front Climbing Club isn't your average gym - it's basecamp for Utah's climbing community. We build spaces that spark connection, push people toward their next send, and bring folks together over shared chalk dust and good coffee. Whether someone's tying in for their first climb or their thousandth, we want them to feel like they've found their people. That spirit runs through every corner of our gyms - including the café.
About the Role
This is a full-time, hybrid role based at our Salt Lake City and South Main gyms, paying $17-$21/hour. You'll spend most of your time behind the counter and in the kitchen at Rumsy's, crafting food and drinks for climbers refueling between routes - and you'll also step onto the gym floor to support front desk, member service, and safety monitoring when needed. It's a role built for someone who likes variety and wants to be woven into the full fabric of The Front.
What You'll Do
In the Café:
  • Serve up food and drinks (yes, including beer) with genuine warmth and hospitality
  • Prep hot and cold menu items with an eye for quality, consistency, and presentation
  • Keep the espresso machine humming and know your way around a good coffee drink
  • Stock, prep, and rotate ingredients while helping manage food cost and waste
  • Keep the café spotless - counters, tables, kitchen, the whole scene
  • Team up with the chef and management to dream up new menu ideas

On the Gym Floor:
  • Welcome climbers in, check them in, and help them feel at home
  • Answer questions about memberships, programs, and gear
  • Keep an eye on the climbing floor for safety - certification tags, belay technique, fall zones
  • Run belay tests and autobelay orientations as needed
  • Jump into cleaning, facility walk-throughs, and whatever the shift calls for
  • Pitch in on events, promotions, and vendor markets when they roll through
What You Bring
You might be a great fit if:
  • You've got 5+ years of experience across work, school, or trade training - including at least 2 years of combined serving and cooking experience
  • You hold (or can get) a Utah Alcohol Server Permit and a food handler's card, and you're 21 or older
  • You've got barista chops and know your espresso drinks
  • You're First Aid/CPR certified (or ready to get certified) and comfortable with the Utah Alcohol Certification for floor duties
  • You genuinely love food, people, and climbing - and it shows
  • You can stand, move, and stay sharp through an 8-12 hour shift, lifting up to 50 lbs when the gym side calls for it
  • You're calm under pressure, quick on your feet, and always looking for ways to make someone's day better
  • Nights and weekends work with your schedule
Perks & Benefits
  • Full medical, dental, vision, and life insurance
  • Short-term and long-term disability, plus accident coverage
  • 401(k) retirement plan
  • Free gym membership
  • Discounts on food and merchandise
  • PTO
  • A crew that feels like a climbing partner, not just coworkers
Join Us!
If you're ready to bring your energy to both the kitchen and the crag-side floor, we want to hear from you. Come be part of a team that treats climbing - and community - like the main event. Apply today and let's get you on the crew.
We're an equal opportunity employer that celebrates diversity and strives to create an inclusive environment for all.
