Barge Engineer Job Description:

Among the numerous responsibilities of a Barge engineer, the core includes ensuring detailed compliance with all safety procedures, the upkeep and repair of the hydraulic, pneumatic, water, fuel and sewage systems of the asset.

Essential Functions:

  • Ensure compliance with regulations and company policies as regards the barge operations.
  • Continuously monitors equipment & machinery, performs Preventative Maintenance at predetermined intervals and records same in CMMS.
  • Communicate any equipment breakdown to the crew and ensure there is a safe and smooth operation.
  • Verify that all safety equipment is in working condition, within inspection and maintained accordingly.
  • Maintains a thorough inventory of all equipment including supplies and spare parts. Orders the same as needed.
  • Oversees the marine operations on the barge and ensures that all machinery is properly operated without mishandling
  • Inspecting and repairing engines, pumps, generators, valves, pipes, and other equipment.
  • Keep records of fuel, water, oil, and other consumables. They must also ensure compliance with environmental, maritime, and company regulations while coordinating with the captain, tugboat, or shore base on navigation, communication, and logistics.
  • Able to perform job in a safe and expedient manner.
  • Participate in the BBI Take 5 Program and utilize Stop Work Authority when necessary.

Skills:

  • Strong mechanical knowledge to perform routine maintenance and troubleshoot equipment issues
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, diagrams, and specifications
  • Excellent spatial awareness and hand-eye coordination for precise maneuvering of equipment
  • Strong communication skills to effectively collaborate with team members
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and adapt to changing priorities
