How much do bar jobs pay per year?

As of Aug 30, 2026, the average yearly pay for bar in Berkeley, CA is $67,496.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $47,800.00 and $84,500.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is a bar staff?

Bar staff are employees who work in bars, pubs, or similar establishments, serving drinks and sometimes food to customers. Their responsibilities often include taking orders, preparing and serving alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, handling payments, and maintaining cleanliness behind the bar. Bar staff may also check identification to ensure customers are of legal drinking age, restock supplies, and provide customer service to enhance the guest experience. In some cases, they may also help with setting up or closing the bar and ensuring compliance with health and safety regulations.

What are different types of bar jobs?

Bar jobs include roles like a bartender, bar porter, host, server, and bar manager. In a bar job, you may work independently or as part of a restaurant to mix drinks, provide customer service to each patron, and monitor each customer's consumption of alcohol following local legislation. You may also help create and implement beverage policies and procedures, ensure adequate inventory, and help manage a budget. Many bar positions involve interacting with patrons to obtain feedback, preparing and serving food, and standing for extended periods. Some bars are regularly exposed to environmental factors like secondhand smoke or excessive noise.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a bartender, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Bartender, you need knowledge of drink recipes, mixology techniques, and safe alcohol service, often supported by completion of responsible beverage service training. Familiarity with bar POS systems, glassware, and bar equipment is typically required. Excellent customer service, multitasking, and communication skills help bartenders create positive guest experiences and handle busy shifts. These skills are essential for ensuring customer satisfaction, efficient service, and a safe, enjoyable bar environment.

What are some common challenges faced by bartenders during busy shifts, and how can they manage them effectively?

During busy shifts, bartenders frequently encounter challenges such as high order volumes, multitasking under pressure, and maintaining accuracy with drink orders. Effective time management, strong communication with barbacks and servers, and staying organized at the workstation are key strategies for handling these challenges. Building a system for quickly prioritizing orders and keeping a positive attitude with customers also helps ensure smooth service and a positive team dynamic.

What is the difference between Bar vs Bartender?

While a bar refers to the establishment or business itself, a bartender is the individual who prepares and serves drinks within that setting. The bar owner or manager oversees operations, whereas the bartender interacts directly with customers. Both roles are essential in the hospitality industry, but they differ in responsibilities and credentials.

What are the roles in a bar?

A bar typically employs roles such as bartenders, who prepare and serve drinks; barbacks, who assist bartenders and maintain the bar area; and managers, who oversee operations and staff. Other roles may include servers, security personnel, and cleaning staff, all working together to ensure smooth service and customer satisfaction.

Bar Manager

San Francisco, CA • On-site

Frankie's

Full-time

Job description

Frankie’s is seeking an experienced, professional Bar Manager to lead our bar program and help set the standard for hospitality, cocktails, and daily operations.

We are looking for someone who is a leader: organized, accountable, composed under pressure, and capable of maintaining a strong team. The ideal candidate has significant cocktail and spirits knowledge, understands the financial and operational side of running a bar, and takes genuine pride in creating an exceptional guest experience.

This is a hands-on position. Our Bar Manager should be equally comfortable behind the bar during a busy service, training a bartender on technique, reviewing inventory and costs, developing a cocktail, or addressing a service issue.

Responsibilities
  • Lead, train, coach, and hold the bar team accountable to Frankie’s standards
  • Maintain a consistently high level of hospitality and guest experience
  • Oversee day-to-day bar operations and service
  • Recruit, onboard, and develop bartenders and bar support staff
  • Maintain opening, closing, prep, cleaning, and service standards
  • Maintain consistency and execution of all cocktail recipes
  • Assist with seasonal cocktail development and continued development of the beverage program
  • Manage liquor, wine, beer, and bar supply inventory
  • Conduct regular inventory counts and maintain accurate records
  • Monitor beverage COGS, purchasing, waste, comps, and product usage
  • Work with vendors and distributors while maintaining responsible purchasing practices
  • Maintain appropriate pars and ensure the bar is properly stocked for service
  • Oversee batching, prep, garnishes, and quality control
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and professional bar
  • Ensure compliance with California ABC requirements, responsible alcohol service standards, food safety requirements, and company policies
  • Build schedules based on business needs and staffing levels
  • Conduct shift meetings and ongoing staff education
  • Work closely with ownership and restaurant management to continuously improve the operation
What We’re Looking For
  • Previous bar management experience in a high-quality cocktail bar, restaurant, hotel, or comparable hospitality operation
  • Strong knowledge of classic and contemporary cocktails, spirits, wine, and beer
  • Strong understanding of beverage costing, inventory management, purchasing, and COGS
  • Proven ability to lead and develop a team
  • Excellent organization and attention to detail
  • Clear and professional communication
  • Ability to give and receive feedback constructively
  • Calm, decisive leadership during high-volume service
  • High standards for cleanliness, preparation, consistency, and hospitality
  • Reliable, punctual, and accountable
  • Comfortable working nights, weekends, and holidays as required by the business
The Right Person

We are not looking for someone who simply wants the title of Bar Manager.

We are looking for someone who wants to own the bar program—someone who notices problems before they become problems, develops the people around them, understands the numbers, protects standards, and leads from the floor.

Frankie’s is committed to building a serious beverage program and a strong hospitality culture. This position offers the opportunity to have a meaningful voice in how that program continues to develop.

To Apply

Please submit your resume along with a short introduction describing your management experience, the types of bar programs you have worked in, and why you believe you would make a good fit. All inquiries can come through Culinary Agents or via email to angelo@frankies-sf.com.
