Bar Helper information

What is a bar helper?

Bar Helpers, also known as barbacks, are support staff in bars and restaurants who assist bartenders with various tasks. Their responsibilities include restocking supplies, cleaning glasses and bar areas, preparing garnishes, and ensuring that bartenders have everything they need to serve customers efficiently. Bar Helpers play a crucial role in maintaining the smooth operation of a bar, especially during busy hours. They may also help with basic cleaning and organizing, but typically do not serve drinks directly to customers.

What are the typical responsibilities and expectations for a bar helper during a busy shift?

As a Bar Helper, you are essential in supporting bartenders and ensuring smooth operations, especially during peak hours. Your main tasks often include restocking supplies, cleaning glassware, clearing tables, and assisting with basic drink preparation under supervision. It's important to stay organized, work efficiently in a fast-paced environment, and communicate well with both the bar team and floor staff. Being proactive and attentive helps keep service running smoothly and provides opportunities to learn more about bartending, which can open doors for advancement within the hospitality industry.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a bar helper, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Bar Helper, you need strong multitasking abilities, basic knowledge of bar operations, and a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with point-of-sale (POS) systems, glassware handling, and basic sanitation procedures is typically required. Excellent teamwork, communication skills, and a positive attitude help Bar Helpers excel in busy environments and support bartenders effectively. These skills ensure efficient service, a clean and organized bar area, and a positive customer experience.

Job description

EVENT BAR STAFF
Overhire / As-Needed | Part-Time, Non-Exempt
$15.00/hour + tips
TheatreSquared is looking for friendly, dependable Event Bar Staff to join our seasonal overhire team and help support performances, special events, and other activities at The Commons Bar & Café.
This is a great opportunity for someone who enjoys working with people, likes the energy of performances and special events, and is interested in bar service-even if you don't have traditional bartending experience.
Our Event Bar Staff primarily serve beer, wine, and pre-batched cocktails, work the register, and help keep the bar and café running smoothly during busy performances and events. You'll work alongside experienced TheatreSquared staff and will not be expected to operate the bar or café on your own.
Previous bartending experience is not required. Experience working a register and providing customer service is more important. If you've worked in a restaurant, coffee shop, fast-food environment, retail, concessions, as a bar-back, or in another customer-facing position, your experience could translate well to this role.
WHAT DOES "OVERHIRE" MEAN?
Overhire staff work as needed based on TheatreSquared's performance and event schedule rather than receiving a regular weekly schedule.
Available shifts may be offered for pickup or assigned based on availability and staffing needs. During performance weeks, there may be several opportunities to work, while during "dark weeks" with no performances, there may be few or no shifts available. Special events may also create additional opportunities throughout the year.
Most shifts are approximately 3-5 hours and may take place during the day, evening, late night, weekends, and occasionally holidays.
There is no minimum number of shifts required. However, reliability is extremely important. Once you pick up or are scheduled for a shift, we count on you to be there and ready to work.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
The majority of this position-approximately 60-70%-is focused on beverage service and supporting the bar during performances and events. Responsibilities may include:
  • Serve beer, wine, batched cocktails, water, and other beverages.
  • Step in and assist with bar service during busy or peak periods.
  • Operate the point-of-sale/register system and accurately process customer payments.
  • Provide friendly, welcoming, and efficient customer service to TheatreSquared patrons and guests.
  • Restock beverages, cups, glassware, ice, and other bar and café supplies.
  • Clear and wipe tables, counters, and service areas.
  • Wash glassware and assist with general cleanup throughout and at the end of a shift.
  • Serve coffee, snacks, prepared food, and other café items as needed.
  • Support bartenders and full-time staff wherever additional help is needed.
  • Occasionally assist with food or catering preparation when specifically scheduled for that type of shift.
  • Wash dishes by hand and/or load dishwasher after catering events
  • Follow all TheatreSquared procedures related to alcohol service, food safety, cash handling, and customer service.
  • Help create a clean, organized, welcoming, and enjoyable environment for our patrons and guests.

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR
  • Must be at least 21 years of age to serve alcoholic beverages.
  • Previous experience operating a register or point-of-sale system is required.
  • Customer service experience is required; restaurant, café, bar-back, concessions, retail, fast food, or similar experience is welcome.
  • Bartending experience is welcome, but not required. We're happy to show the right person how we do things at TheatreSquared.
  • Friendly and comfortable interacting with the public.
  • Dependable and able to show up for accepted shifts.
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment during busy performances and events.
  • Able to work collaboratively and take direction from TheatreSquared's Bar & Café management and event staff.
  • Available for some daytime, evening, late-night, weekend, and occasional holiday shifts.
  • Able to stand for extended periods, bend, reach, clean, restock supplies, and lift and carry up to approximately 30 pounds.
  • Reliable transportation to and from TheatreSquared.

COMPENSATION & SCHEDULING
This is a part-time, non-exempt, overhire/seasonal position paying $15.00 per hour plus tips.
Event Bar Staff do not have a guaranteed number of weekly hours or a regularly scheduled work week. Work opportunities are based on TheatreSquared's changing performance and special-event schedule.
During active performance weeks, Event Bar Staff may have opportunities to work approximately three shifts per week, with additional shifts sometimes available for special events. There may also be periods of several weeks between productions when significantly fewer-or no-shifts are available.
This position is a good fit for someone looking for flexible, occasional work and extra income rather than someone seeking a consistent weekly schedule.
THEATRESQUARED MISSION
We believe that theatre-done well and with passion-can transform lives and communities. At the theatre, in schools and online, we create remarkable performances; broaden access; foster empathy, equity and cohesion; and gather with one another around art, conversation, food and other shared experiences in a welcoming, inclusive space.
