What is a bar back dishwasher?

Bar Back Dishwashers are support staff in bars and restaurants who assist bartenders by restocking supplies, clearing glasses, and washing dishes and barware. Their primary role is to ensure the bar area remains clean, organized, and well-stocked throughout service. Bar Back Dishwashers work behind the scenes to keep operations running smoothly so bartenders can focus on serving customers. They may also help with tasks like taking out trash and replenishing ice or garnishes.

During peak hours, Bar Back Dishwashers often face the challenge of managing a high volume of glassware and bar tools while keeping the workspace clean and organized. Staying calm under pressure, having strong teamwork skills, and preparing your station before the rush can make these busy times more manageable and help you succeed in this high-energy role.

How much do dishwashers get paid?

Dishwashers in NYC typically earn an hourly wage ranging from $15 to $20, depending on experience and the establishment. Job description

About Us

Cream City Concepts is Milwaukee’s hospitality group built for the energy of a packed house. We run Oak Barrel Public House, Who’s on Third, Who’s on Layton, Cream City Catering, and 3rd Street Retreat — craft food, cold drinks, game days, date nights, big events, and a place to stay, all over the city. The pace is fast, the standards are high, and the people are what make it work.

About the Role

The Dishwasher is the engine of the kitchen. A clean, fast, fully stocked dish station is what lets every other station do its job — when the pit runs right, the whole kitchen runs right. This is a hands-on, high-pace role responsible for washing and sanitizing all dishware, glassware, and smallware, keeping the back of house clean and safe, and jumping in to support the team wherever it’s needed. It’s also the first step on our culinary Craft Track — the place a lot of great cooks get their start.

One Kitchen, One Team

In our kitchens, nobody is above any station. When the team needs it, everyone crosses over — as a Dishwasher you’ll help with prep, put away deliveries, and jump in wherever the kitchen needs a hand. We run as one team, not separate jobs.

Clean and Organized — Always

There’s no standing around in our kitchens — if you’ve got time to lean, you’ve got time to clean. When you’re not on a task, you’re cleaning, organizing, restocking, or prepping ahead. You keep your station and the kitchen clean and organized all shift, and you work the cleaning checklists — daily, weekly, and monthly — without being asked. A clean, organized kitchen is the standard here, not the exception.

What We’re Hiring For

Skills change by station. These five don’t — they’re the bar in every CCC kitchen, every shift.

•    Optimistic Warmth — You bring good energy to the back of house and stay steady and positive when it’s slammed and the night runs long.

•    Curious Intelligence — You’re a self-starter. You don’t wait to be told the next thing — you learn the systems fast and find the cleaner, faster way.

•    Work Ethic — You take pride in a spotless rack and a reset station. You push through the rush to get it right, not just get it done.

•    Empathy — You see what the line, the bar, and the servers need next — and have it ready before they ask.

•    Self-Awareness & Integrity — You do the closing checklist right when no one’s watching, and you own a mistake and fix it.

Key Responsibilities

Dish & Warewashing

•    Run the dish machine to standard — wash, sanitize, and properly store all dishes, glassware, smallwares, pots, and pans.

•    Keep clean dishware, glassware, and smallwares stocked and flowing to the line, bar, and FOH so no station ever runs short.

•    Pre-rinse, rack, and run loads efficiently to keep pace with service volume.

Station & Kitchen Cleanliness

•    Keep the dish pit clean and organized all shift — floors dry, drains clear, trash and recycling managed.

•    Support overall BOH cleanliness: trash and cardboard, sweeping and mopping, floor mats, and surface wipe-downs.

•    Assist with deep-cleaning and equipment-cleaning tasks as assigned.

Food Safety & Sanitation

•    Follow all health-department sanitation standards, including safe chemical handling per label and SOP.

•    Maintain correct dish-machine temperatures and sanitizer levels; report any issue to a supervisor immediately.

Team & Line Support

•    Help with basic prep and putting away deliveries when dish volume allows.

•    Step in wherever the team needs a hand to keep service moving.

Opening & Closing

•    Complete opening and closing dish and sanitation checklists fully.

•    Break down, clean, and properly shut down the dish machine and area at close.

Qualifications

•    No prior experience required — we’ll train the right person.

•    Strong work ethic and a real sense of urgency.

•    Reliable and punctual — shows up ready to work.

•    Works well as part of a team in a fast-paced kitchen.

•    Willing to learn and follow food-safety and sanitation standards.

•    Flexible availability including nights, weekends, and holidays.

•    Must be legally authorized to work in the United States.

•    Able to stand for extended periods; bend, reach, and lift up to 50 lbs; and work in a hot, wet environment with exposure to cleaning chemicals.

Success in This Role Means

•    The line, bar, and FOH never run short on clean dishware, glassware, or smallwares.

•    The dish pit and BOH stay clean, organized, and safe — every shift.

•    Sanitation and food-safety standards are met every shift, and health inspections stay clean.

•    The team can count on you to show up, keep pace, and jump in where needed.

Benefits & Perks

•    Competitive hourly pay (based onexperience).

•    Discounted employee meals.

•    Opportunity to grow your skills and move up the culinary Craft Track.
