Banking Software Engineer information

What is a banking software engineer?

Banking Software Engineers are specialized professionals who design, develop, and maintain software systems used in the banking and financial industry. Their work includes creating secure platforms for online banking, payment processing, fraud detection, and transaction management. They ensure that banking software complies with industry regulations and is robust against security threats. These engineers collaborate closely with business analysts and other IT professionals to deliver solutions that meet the evolving needs of banks and their customers.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a banking software engineer?

To thrive as a Banking Software Engineer, you need strong programming skills (such as Java, C#, or Python), a degree in computer science or a related field, and knowledge of financial systems and regulations. Familiarity with core banking platforms, databases (like Oracle or SQL Server), and experience with secure software development practices are typically required, along with relevant certifications such as Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP). Analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for collaborating with stakeholders and addressing complex banking requirements. These skills ensure the delivery of secure, reliable, and compliant banking solutions that support critical financial operations.

What are some common challenges faced by banking software engineers when integrating new technologies with legacy banking systems?

Banking Software Engineers often encounter challenges when integrating modern solutions with legacy banking systems, such as outdated codebases, strict security requirements, and regulatory compliance constraints. These systems can be difficult to modify without risking downtime or errors, which requires careful planning, thorough testing, and close collaboration with IT and security teams. Additionally, engineers must ensure that new technologies do not compromise data integrity or disrupt critical banking operations, making strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail essential in this role.

We work with a cloud-first mindset, Agile delivery practices, and a shared commitment to engineering excellence, continuous improvement, and responsible innovation.

About the Team:

Our team develops and supports the foundational platforms and shared services that enable banking capabilities across Manulife Bank. Our work includes reusable APIs, integration services, notification capabilities, event-driven solutions, and operational tools that help technology teams deliver secure and dependable customer experiences more efficiently.

As part of the team, you will contribute to technology that is used across the organization while gaining exposure to modern cloud platforms, enterprise integration patterns, and AI-assisted development practices.

Position Responsibilities:

We are looking for a Software Engineer to help design, build, and support the APIs, integration services, and cloud-native platforms that power digital banking experiences at Manulife Bank.

You will work with technologies such as Java, Spring Boot, Azure, Kubernetes, event-driven architecture, and AI-assisted development tools. You will collaborate with engineers, architects, product partners, cybersecurity professionals, and operational teams to develop solutions that are secure, resilient, maintainable, and designed around customer needs.

This opportunity is well suited to an engineer who enjoys solving technical problems, learning new technologies, contributing to collaborative design discussions, and improving how software is built and operated.

  • Design, develop, test, deploy, and support modern software applications and platform services.

  • Build and maintain APIs, integration services, event-driven capabilities, notification solutions, and reusable platform components.

  • Write clean, secure, maintainable, and well-tested code using modern software engineering practices.

  • Collaborate with product owners, engineers, architects, cybersecurity teams, and business partners to deliver customer-focused solutions.

  • Participate in backlog refinement, sprint planning, estimation, retrospectives, and other Agile delivery activities.

  • Contribute to technical design discussions and architecture reviews with senior engineers and technical leads.

  • Support production releases, operational readiness activities, and the ongoing health of banking platforms.

  • Investigate and resolve application or platform issues while improving system reliability, security, and performance.

  • Participate in peer code reviews and contribute constructive feedback that strengthens software quality and team learning.

  • Help advance automated testing, CI/CD pipelines, monitoring, observability, and DevSecOps practices.

  • Use AI-assisted development tools responsibly to improve engineering productivity, software quality, and delivery outcomes.

  • Document technical solutions and share knowledge, ideas, and lessons learned with teammates.

Required Qualifications:

  • At least three years of experience developing software applications or services in an enterprise or similarly complex environment.

  • Experience developing backend applications using Java and Spring Boot, or experience with comparable enterprise development frameworks and the ability to learn Java and Spring Boot.

  • Understanding of RESTful APIs, microservices, and distributed application design.

  • Experience working with relational and/or NoSQL databases and data integration solutions.

  • Familiarity with cloud technologies, containerization, or cloud-native application development.

  • Experience using Git-based source control and CI/CD pipelines.

  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to communicate technical ideas clearly and collaborate effectively with technical and non-technical partners.

  • Experience contributing within an Agile or iterative software delivery environment.

  • A commitment to continuous learning, knowledge sharing, and high-quality engineering practices.

Preferred Qualifications:

The following qualifications would be valuable, but you do not need to have experience in every area:

  • Experience with Microsoft Azure services.

  • Experience with Kubernetes or Azure Kubernetes Service, also known as AKS.

  • Experience developing event-driven solutions or working with messaging and enterprise integration platforms.

  • Familiarity with infrastructure-as-code tools such as Terraform.

  • Experience with API management platforms, Azure Functions, or Azure Service Bus.

  • Familiarity with automated testing, application security, or DevSecOps tools such as Snyk and SonarQube.

  • Experience with application monitoring, observability, incident troubleshooting, or operational support.

  • Exposure to AI-assisted development tools such as GitHub Copilot.

  • Familiarity with Model Context Protocol, agentic development workflows, or emerging AI engineering patterns.

  • Experience working in banking, financial services, or another regulated industry.

Technology Environment:

Depending on the project, you may work with:
