This position is PRN
Under the supervision of the General Supervisor, the Blood Banking Technician performs critical laboratory
tests to ensure safe and effective blood transfusions and donations. This position adheres to state, federal,
and international regulatory guidelines to ensure compliance and maintain the safety of all blood products.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
• Follow the laboratory's procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analysis, reporting and
maintaining records of patient test results.
• Conduct laboratory tests to determine blood group antigens, antibodies, and ABO blood typing.
• Prepare blood, plasma, and platelets for transfusions in accordance with established protocols.
• Perform cross-matching tests to determine donor-recipient compatibility.
• Test blood samples for viral and bacterial infections to ensure the safety of transfusion products.
• Safely store and handle blood products, ensuring compliance with all safety standards.
• Adheres to the laboratory's quality control policies, document all quality control activities, instrument and
procedural calibrations and maintenance performed.
• Follow the laboratory's established policies and procedures whenever test systems are not within the
laboratory's established acceptable levels of performance.
• Be capable of identifying problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results
and either correct the problem or immediately notify the general supervisor, technical supervisor, or
director.
• Document all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory's established
performance specification.
• Performs equipment validation, reagent optimization and validation following regulatory guidelines and
procedures.
• Keeps work area physically clean, organized and free of safety hazards.
• Adheres to personnel policies including, but not limited to: schedules and attendance, performance
evaluations, up to date safety training and continuing education required for competency as well as
certification maintenance.
• Participates in regulatory agency inspection readiness and onsite inspections.
• Communicates effectively and timely as needed to co-workers, management, medical directors, and other
divisions.
• Adheres to internal controls and reporting structure.
Requirements
Education / Certifications:
• Bachelor's Degree in a biology, chemical or clinical laboratory sciences or medical technology from an
accredited institution
• Certification from the American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP): MLS, MLT and/or appropriate specialist
certification(s)
Experience / Abilities:
• Minimum 2 years' experience in blood banking or transfusion services.
• Preferred 2 years' experience in general lead/supervisory/key operator experience
• Excellent organizational, communication and interpersonal skills
• Ability to management multiple priorities
• Excellent attention to detail
• Ability to work in a team environment
• Willingness to maintain confidential information
