About This Job

Axos Bank is seeking a technically fluent, high-impact Product Owner to lead product ownership for Axos Bank's Core Services platform-the engine powering all enterprise offerings across Bank, Borrow, Invest, and Plan. This is not a traditional business-facing PO role; it requires deep comfort with backend systems, APIs, data flows, and engineering trade-offs.
You will serve as the connective tissue between engineering teams and business stakeholders, translating complex technical realities into prioritized, well-scoped work. You will partner closely with Engineering, Architecture, QA, and Business to drive delivery discipline, backlog clarity, and measurable outcomes for mission-critical financial services infrastructure.

Responsibilities:

  • Own the product backlog for Core Services platforms including Identity, Rules Manager, Document Service, Notifications, and core banking APIs
  • Deep-dive into technical architecture, API contracts, data schemas, and system dependencies to write precise, engineer-ready epics, features, and user stories
  • Drive prioritization decisions grounded in technical debt, system risk, regulatory impact, and business value-not just feature requests
  • Partner with Engineering leadership (SDMs, Architects) to evaluate feasibility, identify constraints, and ensure scalable, maintainable solutions
  • Act as the single point of accountability for backlog clarity, readiness, acceptance criteria, and definition of done
  • Lead sprint planning, backlog grooming, and release planning in close collaboration with delivery teams
  • Enforce strict release governance-features are well-defined, tested, and aligned with SLA expectations before shipping
  • Monitor production incidents and system health metrics; translate operational data into actionable backlog priorities
  • Drive cross-team alignment across Clearing, AAS, OLB, Commercial, QA, and Infrastructure teams
  • Provide executive-ready reporting on roadmap progress, risks, blockers, and delivery outcomes
  • Evaluate technical proposals and tradeoffs with engineering teams, including service isolation strategies, caching layers, and API versioning approaches

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree

  • 5+ years as a Product Owner / Product Manager with demonstrated ownership of backend or platform engineering teams

  • Strong working knowledge of REST/GraphQL APIs, microservices architecture, distributed systems, and event-driven design
  • Ability to read and interpret technical documentation, API specs, ERDs, and architecture diagrams
  • Proven ability to write detailed, unambiguous user stories and acceptance criteria for backend systems-not just UI features
  • Experience managing complex cross-system dependencies, integration risk, and competing engineering priorities
  • Comfortable working in Agile/Scrum environments alongside senior engineers, architects, and QA teams
  • Experience in regulated environments-banking, fintech, or financial services strongly preferred
  • Strong communication skills; able to bridge technical and executive audiences with equal fluency

Axos Employee Benefits May Include:

  • Medical, Dental, Vision, and Life Insurance

  • Paid Sick Leave, 3 weeks' Vacation, and Holidays (about 11 a year)

  • HSA or FSA account and other voluntary benefits

  • 401(k) Retirement Saving Plan with Employer Match Program and 529 Savings Plan

  • Employee Mortgage Loan Program and free access to an Axos Bank Account with Self-Directed Trading
