Job description

Natural Resources Education Intern

This is a summer internship being offered by the Red Cliff Treaty Natural Resources Division. The internship duration is expected to be 10-12 weeks, with a 40 hour per week schedule. Must be an enrolled member of a Native American tribe and at least 18 years old to apply. Approximate internship dates are June-August. Assist with various Red Cliff Treaty Natural Resources Division projects, including fisheries, wildlife, and hatchery projects. Coordinate with the Red Cliff Boys and Girls Club to plan natural resource related lessons and workshops for youth club members. Assist with supervision and coordination of younger division interns.

Duties and responsibilities include: assisting with data entry as directed by the wildlife and fisheries biologists; working with wildlife specialist to plan simple natural resource educational outreach opportunities for elementary and middle school students at the Red Cliff Boys and Girls Club; assisting with wildlife trapping and monitoring efforts; working closely with staff across the Division to coordinate the schedule of younger youth interns; assisting with fisheries fieldwork, such as fish stocking, stream electro fishing, and checking PIT tag stations; assisting with annual summer cultural events such as Language Camp and Wolf Camp; learning hatchery duties, such as feeding fish, cleaning tanks, and clipping fins; developing an area of interest and producing a technical writing product, such as a report or grant proposal. This is not an exhaustive list of the job duties, and some job duties may be assigned at the discretion of the supervisor.

No direct supervisory authority. Some coordination of younger interns may be an expectation of this position.

Knowledge: No previous experience required. Some general knowledge about the natural resources field or experience working with youth is beneficial.

Qualifications: We are looking for active, ambitious team members who are interested in learning more about Natural Resource careers. The ideal candidate will be responsible, dependable, and safe in the work environment.

Must be 18-25 years old; must have a high school diploma at the time the internship begins; enrolled in a college or technical school to pursue a 2-or 4-year degree, or a recent graduate (within 2 years), in natural resources, education, or related field; valid driver's license. Native American applicants only. Preference will be given to Red Cliff youth, but other enrolled tribal members will be considered in the case of equally qualified candidates. Both male and female candidates are encouraged to apply!

You must be able to be on your feet and walk on uneven terrain. Must be able to lift a minimum of 50 pounds. Duties will occur on forest lands, in streams, on Lake Superior, and in the hatchery setting. Work will vary with some time devoted to an office and/or garage (workshop) setting. The crew will often travel together to field sites. Some vehicle travel is expected, though almost all travel will be within 2 hours of Red Cliff.

Respect and consideration given to the dignity of each customer, visitor and fellow employee is a requisite of successful job performance. Any behavior or attitude that tarnishes the name or image of the Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Chippewa will be subject to immediate disciplinary action up to and including termination.
