What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Backflow Tester, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Backflow Tester, you need a solid understanding of plumbing systems, water safety regulations, and typically a certification in backflow prevention testing. Familiarity with backflow testing equipment, digital reporting tools, and knowledge of local codes are essential for accurate inspections. Attention to detail, problem-solving ability, and strong communication skills help ensure issues are correctly identified and explained to clients. These skills and qualifications are crucial to maintain public health, comply with legal requirements, and build trust with customers.

What is backflow testing?

Backflow testing is the process of checking a plumbing system’s backflow prevention device to ensure it is functioning correctly and preventing contaminated water from flowing back into the clean water supply. This is crucial for maintaining water safety in residential, commercial, and industrial settings. Certified professionals use specialized equipment to test the device, and most local regulations require annual testing to comply with health standards. Regular backflow testing helps protect public health by preventing cross-contamination of drinking water.

What are some of the most common challenges faced by backflow testers in the field?

Backflow testers often encounter challenges such as accessing hard-to-reach or poorly maintained backflow prevention devices, which can be located in confined spaces, underground, or exposed to the elements. Weather conditions and equipment malfunctions can also impact the accuracy and safety of tests. Additionally, testers must frequently coordinate with property owners or facility managers to schedule inspections and ensure compliance with local regulations. Strong problem-solving skills and adaptability are essential for overcoming these obstacles and maintaining high standards of safety and service.

Position Summary

The Drain, Sewer & In-Home Plumbing Advisor is responsible for driving sales of residential drain/sewer solutions and related in-home plumbing improvements. This role focuses on identifying customer needs, presenting clear repair and upgrade options, and managing the sales process from lead generation through closing. Services include sewer lining, sewer dig/replacement, descaling, preventative maintenance programs, water pressure solutions, backflow services, and whole-home filtration. The ideal candidate is confident in a consultative, in-home sales environment, communicates technical issues in plain language, and consistently meets or exceeds revenue goals while delivering a five-star customer experience.

Key ResponsibilitiesCustomer Consultation
  • Conduct in-home site visits and review technician findings (including camera inspections and diagnostic reports).

  • Clearly explain drain/sewer and water system conditions such as root intrusion, corrosion, scale buildup, bellies/sags, offsets, restrictions, pressure loss, or contamination risks.

  • Educate customers on consequences, urgency levels, and long-term risks to property and health.

  • Present tailored recommendations for:

    • Sewer solutions: trenchless lining, dig/replacement, spot repairs.

    • Drain solutions: descaling, hydro-jetting, cable clearing, maintenance cleanings.

    • Water solutions: pressure regulation/upgrades, backflow testing/repair, filtration and water quality improvements.

Proposal & Quoting
  • Prepare accurate quotes and proposals with clear scope, options, warranties, and timelines.

  • Build “Good / Better / Best” packages when appropriate (e.g., descaling vs. lining vs. replacement; basic vs. premium filtration).

  • Walk customers through pricing, permitting needs (if applicable), and financing options.

Sales Process Management
  • Manage the full pipeline from warm lead to closed job.

  • Follow up quickly, handle objections confidently, and close work while maintaining trust and high satisfaction.

  • Maintain urgency on failures or high-risk sewer/water issues without pressure tactics.

Collaboration
  • Partner with drain/sewer techs, camera operators, and field supervisors to validate scope and solution accuracy.

  • Coordinate with dispatch and project teams to schedule jobs, confirm access needs, and align expectations.

  • Communicate job details clearly to ensure smooth delivery and minimal change orders.

Reporting & Forecasting
  • Track all activity in ServiceTitan CRM including notes, estimates, follow-ups, and outcomes.

  • Maintain an organized pipeline and provide accurate weekly/monthly forecasts.

  • Participate in sales meetings and performance reviews with leadership.

After-Sales Support
  • Confirm customer satisfaction after work completion and address concerns promptly.

  • Identify opportunities for ongoing maintenance programs (annual sewer checkups, routine descaling, preventative cleanings, filtration service plans).

  • Build referral relationships and request reviews when appropriate.

QualificationsEducation
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; associate’s or bachelor’s degree in business, construction, or related field preferred.

Experience
  • 2+ years of proven in-home or consultative B2C sales experience preferred (plumbing, drains, restoration, HVAC, or home services ideal).

  • Experience selling underground/sewer repairs, trenchless solutions, or water quality systems is a strong plus (training provided).

Skills
  • Strong customer-based understanding of drain/sewer and residential water systems (we will train!).

  • Ability to interpret inspection footage/photos and present solutions clearly.

  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and presentation skills.

  • High-integrity, customer-first mindset with strong relationship-building ability.

  • Proficiency in CRM software (ServiceTitan preferred).

  • Valid driver’s license.

Performance Metrics
  • Sales revenue generated (monthly/quarterly targets)

  • Lead-to-close conversion rate

  • Average ticket size and solution mix (lining vs. replacement vs. descaling vs. maintenance)

  • Maintenance program attachment rate and renewal growth

  • Customer satisfaction, reviews, and referral rate

Compensation

GENEROUS – Base salary plus commission

  • Bonus opportunities for exceeding sales goals

  • Benefits package including Company Vehicle and Fuel, health, dental, vision, 401k, PTO
