What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Backend Software Developer Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Backend Software Developer Intern, you should have a solid understanding of programming languages like Java, Python, or Node.js, and basic knowledge of algorithms, data structures, and databases. Familiarity with version control systems (like Git), RESTful APIs, and cloud platforms such as AWS or Azure is often expected. Strong problem-solving skills, teamwork, and effective communication set standout interns apart. These skills and qualities are crucial for building reliable backend systems, collaborating across teams, and adapting to real-world engineering challenges.

What types of projects and technologies do Backend Software Developer Interns typically work on during their internship?

Backend Software Developer Interns are often assigned to work on real-world projects such as building APIs, optimizing databases, or improving existing backend services. Interns typically use languages like Python, Java, or Node.js, and work with frameworks and tools such as Django, Spring Boot, or Express.js. Collaboration with frontend developers, QA engineers, and product managers is common, providing valuable experience in agile environments. The projects and technologies may vary depending on the company, but they are designed to help interns gain hands-on experience and contribute meaningfully to the team's goals.

What does a Backend Software Developer Intern do?

A Backend Software Developer Intern assists in building and maintaining the server-side logic, databases, and APIs that power web applications. Their responsibilities typically include writing code, debugging issues, and collaborating with other developers to ensure data flows efficiently between the server and users. Interns often work with languages like Python, Java, or Node.js and gain practical experience with databases, cloud services, and development tools. This role provides valuable exposure to real-world software engineering practices and helps interns develop the technical and teamwork skills needed for a career in backend development.

Job description

We are designing the grid of the future!

Be a part of an innovative team shaping the grid of the future through advanced energy intelligence. For more than half a century, Electric Power Engineers, (EPE) has partnered with power and energy clients across the globe providing consulting expertise and energy intelligence software solutions for complex engineering and grid modeling challenges. As leaders in the renewables space, we are focused on building a modern, secure, and resilient gid.   Join us in making an impact on the communities we serve and the environment in which we live. Together we can transform the future of energy.

Join us in leading the change!

Electric Power Engineers, Inc. (EPE) is

an engineering consulting firm working in renewable generation, grid integration, compliance, and technical studies. We are seeking an AI Automation Developer Intern to build internal AI-powered tools that improve the efficiency and consistency of our engineering and compliance teams.

You will work with technical staff (study engineers, commissioning specialists, compliance analysts) to translate their workflows into AI-assisted solutions — for example, chatbots that answer questions on NERC standards, ISO commissioning steps, study procedures (e.g., MOD-026/027, PRC-019), or internal SOPs and templates.

How you can make an impact:

  • Develop internal AI assistants/tools to support engineering and compliance workflows
(e.g., policy Q&A bots, study-procedure assistants, template generators, queryable knowledge bases)
  • Ingest and structure internal knowledge (standards, SOPs, commissioning guides, templates, past deliverables)
  • Apply prompt engineering / retrieval-augmented generation to ensure accuracy and compliance
  • Integrate prototypes with internal systems and shared knowledge libraries where applicable
  • Validate tools with internal users (engineers, PMs, compliance analysts) and iterate based on feedback
  • Produce technical documentation for maintenance, auditability, and hand-off to internal teams

Bring your passion, here's what’s needed:

  • Completion of, or current enrollment in, a bachelor’s degree program with a major in Computer Science, Electrical and Computer Engineering, or Data/AI from an accredited college or university.
  • Proficient programming in Python or JavaScript for backend automation / APIs
  • Familiarity with modern LLM stacks (OpenAI/Anthropic APIs, LangChain, RAG, embeddings, vector DBs)
  • Strong written communication for clear documentation and knowledge capture
  • Minimum GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • Expected Start Date: Tuesday, September 8th

Location

  • Fall internships will be conducted remotely. Position is part time, in which hours are a minimum of 10 hours a week and a maximum of 40 a week.
