What is a Backend Full Stack Engineer?

A Backend Full Stack Engineer is a software developer who specializes in building and maintaining the server-side logic, databases, and APIs of an application, while also having proficiency in front-end technologies. They are capable of working on both the backend and frontend parts of web applications, allowing them to develop end-to-end features and ensure seamless integration between the client and server sides. This role requires strong knowledge of programming languages such as JavaScript (Node.js), Python, or Java, as well as familiarity with databases, server architectures, and various web frameworks. Backend Full Stack Engineers often collaborate with designers, frontend developers, and other stakeholders to deliver complete and functional products.

How does a Backend Full Stack Engineer typically collaborate with frontend developers and other team members?

Backend Full Stack Engineers frequently work alongside frontend developers, product managers, and QA engineers to deliver seamless user experiences. They are responsible for building and maintaining server-side logic and APIs, ensuring data flows efficiently between the backend and frontend. Effective communication is essential, as they must align backend functionality with frontend requirements and participate in code reviews, sprint planning, and troubleshooting sessions. This collaborative environment fosters learning and often provides opportunities to contribute across the tech stack, enhancing both technical and interpersonal skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Backend Full Stack Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Backend Full Stack Engineer, you need strong proficiency in server-side languages (such as Node.js, Python, or Java), database management, and a solid understanding of front-end technologies, usually supported by a degree in computer science or related experience. Familiarity with frameworks (like Express, Django, or Spring), version control systems (like Git), and cloud platforms (such as AWS or Azure) is typically required. Effective problem-solving, communication, and teamwork skills help you collaborate across disciplines and deliver robust solutions. These skills ensure scalable, maintainable applications and seamless integration between backend and frontend systems, which are critical for organizational success.

Location- Irvine, CA

Job Description:
Overview

We are seeking a Senior Full-Stack Engineer to support the development of internal Incident Management Tools used by Central Technical Operations Services (C-TOS). This role is focused on building high-impact features that reduce operational toil, improve incident response efficiency, and increase team capacity.

This is a hands-on, backend-leaning full-stack role requiring end-to-end ownership across design, development, testing, and delivery in a fast-paced, complex environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, test, and deliver production-ready features end-to-end (no separate QA handoff)
  • Build and enhance internal tooling platforms supporting incident management workflows
  • Develop scalable services and APIs using TypeScript/Node.js-based frameworks
  • Contribute across the full stack, including Vue.js (or React) frontend components
  • Implement cloud-native solutions leveraging AWS services (Lambda, DynamoDB, SQS, etc.)
  • Deploy and manage infrastructure using AWS CDK or similar IaC frameworks
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to navigate dependency-heavy systems and approvals
  • Optimize systems for performance, reliability, and operational efficiency

Core Deliverables

  • Build automation-driven features that reduce manual effort (toil) and improve operational workflows
  • Deliver enhancements across Incident Management Tooling, including:
    • Automated paging escalation workflows
    • UI consolidation to reduce context switching
    • Service directory improvements for faster resolution
    • Workstream timeline enhancements
    • On-call rotation visibility and tracking
    • Auto-correlation of users to incidents/pages
    • Intelligent autofill of team/group data
    • Automated MIN (Major Incident Notification) workflows
    • CloudWatch dashboard/chart integration
    • Full audit logging of user/system actions
    • COE (Correction of Error) workflow improvements
    • Integration of auto-summarized incident call data

Required Qualifications

  • Strong full-stack engineering experience with a backend-first focus
  • Hands-on experience with:
    • TypeScript, Node.js
    • Vue.js (preferred) or React
  • Proven ability to build:
    • APIs, backend services, and distributed systems
  • Experience working in cloud environments (AWS strongly preferred):
    • Lambda, DynamoDB, SQS, CloudWatch, etc.
  • Familiarity with Infrastructure as Code (CDK preferred)
  • Demonstrated ability to:
    • Work in agile, fast-moving environments with shifting priorities
    • Own features from concept through production
    • Navigate complex systems with cross-team dependencies

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience in large-scale engineering environments (Amazon or similar is a plus, not required)
  • Experience building internal tools, platform systems, or operational tooling
  • Exposure to:
    • Incident management systems
    • Automation and workflow optimization
    • Observability, logging, and monitoring systems

Ideal Candidate Profile

  • Backend-leaning full-stack builder who can contribute immediately
  • Experience delivering high-impact tooling that improves efficiency and incident response
  • Comfortable in ambiguous, high-ownership environments
  • Able to operate with minimal ramp-up and oversight

What This Role Is NOT

  • Not a frontend-heavy/UI-only role
  • Not a split Dev/QA structure
  • Not suited for candidates requiring extended onboarding

Why This Role

  • Direct impact on critical incident management systems
  • Opportunity to build tooling that reduces operational burden at scale
  • High ownership and visibility working with C-TOS and incident command teams

Quick Disqualifiers

  • Limited or no TypeScript/Node.js backend experience
  • Primarily frontend/UI-focused backgrounds
  • Unable to meet Irvine onsite expectations (or hybrid requirement)
  • Requires significant ramp-up/support
