What is a backend full stack engineer?

A Backend Full Stack Engineer is a software developer who specializes in building and maintaining the server-side logic, databases, and APIs of an application, while also having proficiency in front-end technologies. They are capable of working on both the backend and frontend parts of web applications, allowing them to develop end-to-end features and ensure seamless integration between the client and server sides. This role requires strong knowledge of programming languages such as JavaScript (Node.js), Python, or Java, as well as familiarity with databases, server architectures, and various web frameworks. Backend Full Stack Engineers often collaborate with designers, frontend developers, and other stakeholders to deliver complete and functional products.

How does a backend full stack engineer typically collaborate with frontend developers and other team members?

Backend Full Stack Engineers frequently work alongside frontend developers, product managers, and QA engineers to deliver seamless user experiences. They are responsible for building and maintaining server-side logic and APIs, ensuring data flows efficiently between the backend and frontend. Effective communication is essential, as they must align backend functionality with frontend requirements and participate in code reviews, sprint planning, and troubleshooting sessions. This collaborative environment fosters learning and often provides opportunities to contribute across the tech stack, enhancing both technical and interpersonal skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a backend full stack engineer?

To thrive as a Backend Full Stack Engineer, you need strong proficiency in server-side languages (such as Node.js, Python, or Java), database management, and a solid understanding of front-end technologies, usually supported by a degree in computer science or related experience. Familiarity with frameworks (like Express, Django, or Spring), version control systems (like Git), and cloud platforms (such as AWS or Azure) is typically required. Effective problem-solving, communication, and teamwork skills help you collaborate across disciplines and deliver robust solutions. These skills ensure scalable, maintainable applications and seamless integration between backend and frontend systems, which are critical for organizational success.

Job description

About Us:
We are establishing the first distributed Al infrastructure dedicated to personalized Al.
The evolving needs of a data-driven society are demanding scalability and flexibility. We believe that the future of Al is distributed and enables real-time data processing at the edge, closer to where data is generated. We are building a future where a company's data and IP remains private and it's possible to bring large models directly to consumer hardware without removing information from the model.
About the Role
We are looking for a Staff Full Stack Engineer to drive the development of high-performance web and desktop applications while ensuring scalability, maintainability, and real-time communication efficiency. In this role, you'll collaborate with cross-functional teams to design and implement solutions that power our core products. Your expertise in AI-native engineering (agentic workflows, strong architectural seams, and test-driven delivery) will be essential as we move quickly without compromising quality. Day to day you'll reach for whatever technology best fits the problem - today that often means React, TypeScript, and Tauri, with real-time collaboration and CI/CD as core parts of how we ship. If you are passionate about engineering excellence, tackling complex technical challenges, and mentoring engineers, this is the role for you.
Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with product, design, and engineering teams to translate business requirements into high-quality software solutions.
  • Design, develop, and maintain web and desktop applications.
  • Utilize CI/CD pipelines using GitLab, ensuring automated testing and smooth deployments.
  • Write clean, scalable, and maintainable code across the codebase
  • Write testable code and the tests to go with it
  • Participate in code reviews, sharing best practices and improving overall code quality.
  • Troubleshoot and debug issues in production and non-production environments.
  • Stay up to date with emerging technologies and propose improvements to architecture and workflows.
  • Architect complex state management solutions for large-scale applications.
  • Design and implement efficient processes for data processing, caching, and real-time updates ensuring scalability
  • Provide technical mentorship, guiding engineers on best practices, system design and performance optimizations.
  • Lead architectural discussions and contribute to long-term technical strategies ensuring alignment with business goals.

Requirements & Skills
  • 7+ years of professional experience developing in Javascript or TypeScript
  • Strong proficiency in building scalable applications.
  • Expertise in HTML, CSS, SCSS, and TypeScript.
  • Experience with real-time communication protocols (WebSockets, MQTT).
  • Strong proficiency in unit testing and E2E testing frameworks (Cypress).
  • Knowledge of Rust and Python is beneficial for backend integration.
  • Experience with relational and/or non-relational databases
  • Proficiency in CI/CD pipelines using GitLab and experience with DevOps tools.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and a strong ability to troubleshoot complex issues.
  • Strong communication skills and a collaborative mindset.
  • Deep expertise in state management patterns and libraries such as Redux or Zustand with experience in optimizing complex UI interactions.
  • Experience designing and implementing scalable and efficient data fetching, caching, and synchronization.
  • Proven experience in leading technical initiatives, collaborating with stakeholders, and driving best engineering practices across teams.
