Backend Full Stack Engineer information

What is a backend full stack engineer?

A Backend Full Stack Engineer is a software developer who specializes in building and maintaining the server-side logic, databases, and APIs of an application, while also having proficiency in front-end technologies. They are capable of working on both the backend and frontend parts of web applications, allowing them to develop end-to-end features and ensure seamless integration between the client and server sides. This role requires strong knowledge of programming languages such as JavaScript (Node.js), Python, or Java, as well as familiarity with databases, server architectures, and various web frameworks. Backend Full Stack Engineers often collaborate with designers, frontend developers, and other stakeholders to deliver complete and functional products.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a backend full stack engineer?

To thrive as a Backend Full Stack Engineer, you need strong proficiency in server-side languages (such as Node.js, Python, or Java), database management, and a solid understanding of front-end technologies, usually supported by a degree in computer science or related experience. Familiarity with frameworks (like Express, Django, or Spring), version control systems (like Git), and cloud platforms (such as AWS or Azure) is typically required. Effective problem-solving, communication, and teamwork skills help you collaborate across disciplines and deliver robust solutions. These skills ensure scalable, maintainable applications and seamless integration between backend and frontend systems, which are critical for organizational success.

How does a backend full stack engineer typically collaborate with frontend developers and other team members?

Backend Full Stack Engineers frequently work alongside frontend developers, product managers, and QA engineers to deliver seamless user experiences. They are responsible for building and maintaining server-side logic and APIs, ensuring data flows efficiently between the backend and frontend. Effective communication is essential, as they must align backend functionality with frontend requirements and participate in code reviews, sprint planning, and troubleshooting sessions. This collaborative environment fosters learning and often provides opportunities to contribute across the tech stack, enhancing both technical and interpersonal skills.

What is the difference between Backend Full Stack Engineer vs Frontend Developer?

AspectBackend Full Stack EngineerFrontend Developer

Required SkillsProgramming languages like Python, Java, Node.js; databases; server managementHTML, CSS, JavaScript; frameworks like React or Angular

Understanding these differences helps employers and job seekers target the right skills and responsibilities for each role.

Job description

Full Stack Engineer About this role

We are looking for a Full Stack Engineer (employee #5!) excited to ship a consumer travel product built with AI at its core. This role will have enormous ownership and impact over the shape of the software engineering team, and will be responsible for key system design & architectural decisions. This is a product focused role on a team that strives for good code, fast iteration cycles, and a high quality user experience.

What you’ll be doing

You’ll work alongside an incredible team building in an AI native environment.

You'll solve hard technical problems from scratch, owning the solution through the entire development lifecycle.

You'll contribute to the creation of the team culture, as well as inner tooling and processes.

What we are looking for
  • You have built a technically strong, independent project from scratch (e.g., an open-source project or functioning product) and are able to ideate & execute on a product idea end-to-end.
  • You have worked in a high-growth, fast-paced environment (ideally another startup) and can drive things forward with relatively little directional oversight.
  • You want ownership, and you thrive on a small team.
  • You want to play at an elite level, and want to be surrounded by other people who want to win.
Developers on the team today
  • Work primarily in Python & TypeScript.
  • Ship UIs in React, often with Tailwind, and usually with Next.js.
  • Commit against a monorepo where every engineer is expected to work across the full tech stack.
  • Focus on time-to-value and prioritizing velocity and speed of iteration (we know getting to product market fit means having as many possible swings at bat).
  • Value clear written communication (we write more than we meet).
  • Set clear goals for themselves and commit to them in a group setting.
  • Can always answer the question “what did you ship this week?”
Why work at Gondola

Join a fantastic, tight-knit team at the right time: We just raised a seed round from a fantastic group of investors, and you'd join at an important time when a single person could significantly change the course of the company.

Do your life's work with people you’ll enjoy working with: we care strongly about our craft and want every person at Gondola to feel like they're growing every day. We believe in the idea that working with people you both enjoy and have respect for makes everything better. We hire thoughtfully and only work with people we admire deeply.

Build the future of travel: 10 years from now, consumer travel will look fundamentally different than it does today. This is an opportunity to be an early employee at a generational consumer brand.
