What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Backend Full Stack Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Backend Full Stack Developer, you need strong programming skills in languages like JavaScript, Python, or Java, along with a solid understanding of databases, APIs, and system architecture, often backed by a degree in computer science or equivalent experience. Proficiency with frameworks such as Node.js, Django, or Spring Boot, version control systems like Git, and familiarity with cloud platforms are typically required. Strong problem-solving, effective communication, and adaptability are essential soft skills for collaborating across teams and handling complex technical challenges. These skills are crucial for building scalable, reliable applications and ensuring seamless integration between backend and frontend systems.

How do Backend Full Stack Developers typically collaborate with front-end teams during a project?

Backend Full Stack Developers frequently work closely with front-end developers to ensure seamless integration between server-side logic and user interfaces. This collaboration often includes regular meetings to discuss API requirements, troubleshoot integration issues, and align on project timelines. Developers may also participate in code reviews and joint debugging sessions to maintain consistency and performance across the application. Open communication and a shared understanding of both front- and back-end technologies are key to delivering cohesive solutions.

What is a Backend Full Stack Developer?

They design, build, and maintain the logic, databases, and APIs that power web applications, while also being capable of handling client-side code when necessary. Their expertise includes languages like Java, Python, or Node.js for backend, and familiarity with frontend technologies such as HTML, CSS, and JavaScript frameworks. This versatility allows them to work across the entire technology stack, ensuring seamless integration between the application's user interface and its core functionality.

What is the salary of a 7 year full stack developer?

A full stack developer with 7 years of experience typically earns between $80,000 and $130,000 annually, depending on location, industry, and skill set. Salaries can increase with expertise in specific frameworks, cloud services, and certifications like AWS or React. Factors such as company size and project complexity also influence compensation.

This role offers the opportunity to shape and scale a globally distributed HR and payroll platform that powers work for millions of people across more than 150 countries. You will work in a highly collaborative, remote-first engineering environment where autonomy, ownership, and technical excellence are deeply valued. The position involves building end-to-end features across both frontend and backend systems, contributing directly to the reliability and scalability of a mission-critical global infrastructure. You will collaborate closely with Product, Design, and DevOps teams to deliver seamless, high-performance user experiences. The work spans modern web technologies and cloud-native architectures, with a strong focus on quality, security, and maintainability. This is a high-impact engineering role where your contributions will directly influence how global teams are hired, managed, and paid.

Accountabilities
  • Design, develop, and maintain full-stack web applications using TypeScript, JavaScript, React, and Express, ensuring scalable and maintainable architecture across systems.
  • Build and optimize server-side APIs, business logic, and data models, primarily using Express and related backend frameworks.
  • Develop responsive, component-driven frontend interfaces using React, including hooks, reusable components, testing, and performance optimization.
  • Design and manage database schemas and queries in PostgreSQL, ensuring efficient data handling and system reliability.
  • Create modular, reusable code across frontend and backend systems to improve development efficiency and product scalability.
  • Perform debugging, testing, and code reviews to ensure high-quality, secure, and reliable software delivery.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with engineering, product, and design teams while contributing to continuous improvement of engineering practices and tools.
Requirements

  • Solid understanding of RESTful APIs, microservices architecture, asynchronous programming, and scalable system design.
  • Experience with testing frameworks such as Jest, Mocha, Chai, React Testing Library, Storybook, and Cypress is highly desirable.
  • Familiarity with cloud-based SaaS environments and production-grade distributed systems.
  • Knowledge of containerization tools such as Docker and Kubernetes is a strong plus.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to collaborate across technical and non-technical stakeholders in a remote-first environment.
  • Strong sense of ownership, attention to detail, and a customer-focused mindset when delivering technical solutions.
Benefits
  • Competitive total compensation package aligned with experience and location.
  • Stock grant opportunities depending on role and employment type.
  • Fully remote-first work model with optional access to shared workspaces.
  • Comprehensive benefits and perks tailored by country and employment status.
