Job description

**This is a hybrid position with an onsite requirement of 1-2 days per week in Alpharetta, GA. Candidates should be within a reasonable commuting distance (approximately 50 miles) of Alpharetta, GA to support onsite requirements.
The Senior Software Engineer will help build and support enterprise applications using Java, Spring Boot Microservices, and Microsoft Azure cloud services. Along with writing effective code, the position will be responsible for designing, building, delivering, maintaining, and supporting highly scalable, secure, and high-performance products and applications. The incumbent will use industry best practices and work collaboratively with a cross-functional team of product managers, UX designers, architects, principal engineers, software engineers, test automation teams, and DevOps engineers. This role requires strong analytical and problem-solving skills, hands-on experience with Azure Functions and Azure Durable Functions, exposure to database design and optimization, and the ability to support mission-critical production systems.
Responsibilities
  • Performs as a key contributor to an engineering team that builds and supports exceptional products and enterprise applications that provide innovative solutions to challenging business use cases, existing systems, and operational problems
  • Participates in architectural design, system analysis, and programming activities on application software, including independent research and study when needed
  • Designs, develops, and maintains scalable, secure, and high-performance applications using Core Java, Spring Boot Microservices, RESTful APIs, and distributed system architectures
  • Develops and supports cloud-native solutions leveraging Microsoft Azure, including Azure Functions and Azure Durable Functions
  • Develops high-quality and production-ready software by using best-practice data structures, algorithms, design patterns, and frameworks that are maintainable, scalable, responsive, and secure
  • Writes highest quality code with attention to scalability, security, and performance and with an end-to-end mindset from conception to delivery and production support, owning specifications, quality, release deployments, and monitoring of production health
  • Designs and implements RESTful APIs, event-driven integrations, and distributed system architectures
  • Analyzes, designs, and optimizes database schemas, tables, indexes, queries, and data access strategies
  • Troubleshoots and resolves performance, scalability, and reliability issues across application and database layers
  • Produces complete, simple, and readable technical documentation for everything developed and maintains a team culture of documenting everything
  • Tests and ensures quality of all code developed in line with principles of test-driven development and continuous delivery, utilizing test automation frameworks wherever possible
  • Participates in code reviews, provides technical guidance, and mentors software engineers
  • Collaborates closely with Engineering leadership, Product Managers, Designers, Test Automation, DevOps, and other teams and business units to define, prioritize, sequence, and scope business and functional requirements and drive results
  • Supports CI/CD pipelines, automated deployments, cloud-native operational practices, and monitoring of production health
  • Provides production support, incident troubleshooting, root cause analysis, and continuous improvement initiatives
  • Ensures adherence to coding standards, security requirements, and enterprise architecture guidelines
  • Performs impact assessment of product, hardware, and software upgrades

Qualifications
  • 4+ years of professional experience designing, developing, and supporting enterprise applications using Java and Microservices Architecture.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field; additional experience may be accepted in lieu of education or degree.
  • Strong expertise in Core Java (Java 17+) is required, including Object-Oriented Programming, Collections Framework, Multithreading and Concurrency, Exception Handling, and JVM Performance Tuning.
  • Extensive experience developing Spring Boot Microservices is required.
  • Hands-on experience with Azure Functions, Azure Durable Functions, REST APIs, and Microservices Architecture is required.
  • Strong knowledge of relational databases and data modeling, including database schema design, tables, indexes, views, stored procedures, SQL performance tuning, and query optimization is required.
  • Ability to independently design and develop enterprise-grade solutions, contribute to modernization initiatives, and drive continuous improvements in performance, scalability, and reliability is required.
  • Experience supporting and troubleshooting production systems is required.
  • Strong written, verbal, communication, collaboration, and presentation skills are required.
  • Strong understanding of SDLC, Agile methodologies, and DevOps practices is required.
  • Experience designing and developing highly scalable and secure applications and products.
  • Experience developing and deploying applications on Microsoft Azure.
  • Experience with Azure services such as Service Bus, Event Grid, Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS), Application Insights, and Azure DevOps is a plus.
  • Experience with Docker, Kubernetes, and containerized deployments is a plus.
  • Exposure to event-driven architectures, messaging technologies, CI/CD pipelines, and Infrastructure as Code (IaC) is a plus.
  • Experience in healthcare, insurance, or other highly regulated enterprise environments is a plus.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to support mission-critical production environments.
  • Ability to understand business plans and apply that information to the development of an IT business case.
  • Anticipates problems, resistance, or likely objections and takes action to resolve them.
  • Ability to guide, train, and mentor associate engineers.
  • Highly skilled in developing quantitative cost-benefit analyses to measure improvements.

Base Pay Information
The national base pay range at the end is a good-faith estimate of what Delta Dental may pay for new hires. Actual pay may vary based on Delta Dental's assessment of the candidate's knowledge, skills, abilities (KSAs), related experience, education, certifications and ability to meet required minimum job qualifications. Other factors impacting pay include prevailing wages in the work location and internal equity.
