Backend Engineer Java information

What does a backend engineer Java do?

A Backend Engineer Java is responsible for developing and maintaining the server-side logic, databases, and application programming interfaces (APIs) using the Java programming language. They ensure that the backend of web applications or software systems is efficient, secure, and scalable. Their work often involves collaborating with frontend developers, designing system architecture, and optimizing performance to handle large volumes of user requests. Backend Java engineers often use frameworks such as Spring or Hibernate and work with databases like MySQL or PostgreSQL.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a backend engineer Java?

To thrive as a Backend Engineer Java, you need a solid understanding of Java programming, data structures, algorithms, and experience with backend frameworks, typically supported by a relevant degree or industry experience. Familiarity with tools and technologies such as Spring Boot, RESTful APIs, relational databases, and build systems like Maven or Gradle is commonly required. Problem-solving ability, teamwork, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for excelling in collaborative and fast-paced development environments. These combined skills ensure robust, scalable backend systems that meet business needs and integrate smoothly within larger software architectures.

How does a backend engineer Java typically collaborate with frontend developers and other stakeholders in a project?

As a Backend Engineer Java, you will regularly collaborate with frontend developers to ensure seamless integration between server-side logic and user interfaces. This often involves participating in design discussions, clarifying API requirements, and troubleshooting integration issues. You’ll also engage with product managers, QA engineers, and sometimes DevOps teams to align on project goals, timelines, and deployment strategies. Effective communication is key to translating business requirements into reliable backend solutions and maintaining smooth workflows across the team.

What is the difference between Backend Engineer Java vs Backend Developer Java?

AspectBackend Engineer JavaBackend Developer Java
Primary FocusDesigning, developing, and maintaining server-side applications and systemsImplementing and coding backend functionalities based on specifications
ResponsibilitiesSystem architecture, performance optimization, API developmentWriting code, debugging, integrating databases
Skills & CertificationsJava, Spring, REST APIs, SQL, cloud platformsJava, Spring, SQL, version control, testing tools
Work EnvironmentCollaborative teams, project planning, architecture designCode implementation, debugging, feature development

Both roles require Java expertise and similar certifications, but Backend Engineer Java typically involves higher-level system design and architecture responsibilities, while Backend Developer Java focuses more on coding and implementing features. Employers often see these roles as complementary within software development teams.

Role Overview

Employees in this job function are responsible for designing, building, and operating high-throughput backend systems that ingest, process, and serve large volumes of telematics data from connected vehicle fleets. They work at the intersection of distributed systems, data engineering, and API development, delivering reliable, low-latency services that power fleet intelligence products for commercial and enterprise customers.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design and develop scalable, high-performance backend services and APIs that process and expose telematics data, including GPS, trip events, driver behavior, vehicle diagnostics, and sensor telemetry, at fleet scale.
  • Build and maintain real-time and batch data pipelines that ingest high-volume vehicle event streams from messaging systems (e.g., Pub/Sub, Kafka) into data warehouses and operational stores.
Required Qualifications
  • Education: Bachelor's Degree
  • Experience: 7+ years in IT, with 5+ years in development. Experience in two coding languages or advanced practice in one language.
Technical Skills
  • GCP: Design, deploy, and manage workloads on GCP (Compute Engine, Cloud Storage, IAM, VPC networking, Cloud Composer, etc.), including provisioning infrastructure, configuring security/access controls, and troubleshooting performance or cost issues in production. (3+ years)
  • Big Data: Design and optimize data pipelines and storage architectures for large-scale datasets using tools such as Spark, Hadoop, Kafka, or Dataflow; understanding of distributed computing, partitioning, and data lake/warehouse patterns. (3+ years)
  • Artificial Intelligence & Expert Systems: Build, train, and deploy machine learning models or rule-based expert systems to support decision automation (e.g., predictive maintenance, fraud detection, recommendation engines); familiarity with TensorFlow, PyTorch, or Vertex AI. (1+ years)
  • API: Design, build, secure, and document RESTful (or GraphQL) APIs, including authentication/authorization (OAuth2, API keys), versioning, rate limiting, and integration with internal and third-party systems. (3+ years)
  • BigQuery: Write optimized SQL queries in BigQuery; manage datasets/partitioning/clustering for performance and cost control; integrate BigQuery with BI tools (e.g., Looker, Data Studio) or downstream applications for reporting/analytics. (2+ years)
Preferred Qualifications
  • Google Cloud Platform: Broader GCP ecosystem knowledge beyond core required skill, such as Pub/Sub, Cloud Functions, GKE (Kubernetes), Cloud Build/CI-CD pipelines, or cost-optimization/FinOps practices.
  • Languages: Kotlin, Java, Python, or equivalent JVM/backend language.
  • Frameworks: Spring Boot, gRPC, REST API design.
  • Data: BigQuery, PostgreSQL, Redis, Bigtable, Kafka or Pub/Sub.
  • Infrastructure: GCP (or equivalent), Docker, Kubernetes, CI/CD pipelines.
