Backend Engineer Java information

What does a backend engineer Java do?

A Backend Engineer Java is responsible for developing and maintaining the server-side logic, databases, and application programming interfaces (APIs) using the Java programming language. They ensure that the backend of web applications or software systems is efficient, secure, and scalable. Their work often involves collaborating with frontend developers, designing system architecture, and optimizing performance to handle large volumes of user requests. Backend Java engineers often use frameworks such as Spring or Hibernate and work with databases like MySQL or PostgreSQL.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a backend engineer Java?

To thrive as a Backend Engineer Java, you need a solid understanding of Java programming, data structures, algorithms, and experience with backend frameworks, typically supported by a relevant degree or industry experience. Familiarity with tools and technologies such as Spring Boot, RESTful APIs, relational databases, and build systems like Maven or Gradle is commonly required. Problem-solving ability, teamwork, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for excelling in collaborative and fast-paced development environments. These combined skills ensure robust, scalable backend systems that meet business needs and integrate smoothly within larger software architectures.

How does a backend engineer Java typically collaborate with frontend developers and other stakeholders in a project?

As a Backend Engineer Java, you will regularly collaborate with frontend developers to ensure seamless integration between server-side logic and user interfaces. This often involves participating in design discussions, clarifying API requirements, and troubleshooting integration issues. You’ll also engage with product managers, QA engineers, and sometimes DevOps teams to align on project goals, timelines, and deployment strategies. Effective communication is key to translating business requirements into reliable backend solutions and maintaining smooth workflows across the team.

What is the difference between Backend Engineer Java vs Backend Developer Java?

Who We Are

Wostmann and Associates, Inc. Founded in 1984, WAI has spent over four decades providing software engineering, technology integration, system analysis, project management, quality assurance, and information security services to state and federal agencies and private‑sector clients. As a federal HUBZone‑certified firm, we deliver practical results for our customers through the informed use of information technology and a solid understanding of business needs, culture, and technical environment. We seek people with a combination of programming, consulting, and business experience.

About the Role

We are looking for a highly skilled Senior Full Stack Developer with deep expertise in enterprise Java and developing cloud‑native enterprise solutions to support our government and private‑sector clients. Depending on the engagement, this role may serve as the technical lead for backend or full‑stack architecture on one of our client engagements, taking ownership of system design and implementation decisions while working closely with end users and other project team members to deliver reliable, maintainable enterprise applications.

Depending on the engagement, job duties may include:
  • Design, develop, and maintain enterprise Java‑based backend systems composed of independently‑deployable microservices leveraging reactive design principles.
  • Architect and implement cloud‑native, distributed systems deployed in containerized, Kubernetes‑based environments.
  • Translate system requirements into scalable technical designs, including service architecture, API contracts, and data models.
  • Lead and participate in projects of varying size and complexity, serving as technical lead when needed.
  • Work with clients and other contractors to ensure new development and modifications don’t negatively affect the broader client environment.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior developers.
  • Contribute across the full stack — including front‑end development in React — when an engagement calls for it.
  • Write technical documentation, requirements, process flows, and system specifications.
