Work EnvironmentDatabase administration, data architecture teamsApplication development teams, full-stack projects
Common CertificationsOracle Certified Professional, Microsoft SQL Server certificationsJava, Python certifications, AWS Developer

While both roles work on backend systems, the Backend Database Developer specializes in data storage and database management, whereas the Backend Software Engineer focuses on building server-side applications and APIs. Understanding these distinctions helps in choosing the right career path or job search focus.

What are the typical collaboration points between a Backend Database Developer and other teams in a tech organization?

Backend Database Developers frequently work alongside frontend developers, DevOps engineers, and data analysts to ensure seamless data flow and application performance. They collaborate with frontend teams to design APIs and data models that meet user requirements, and with DevOps to optimize database deployment and scaling strategies. Regular communication with data analysts helps ensure that data structures support reporting and analytics needs. This collaborative environment encourages cross-functional problem-solving and continuous learning.

What are Backend Database Developers?

Backend Database Developers are IT professionals who design, build, and maintain the databases that power websites and applications. They focus on how data is stored, accessed, and managed behind the scenes, ensuring reliability, efficiency, and security. Their work includes creating database schemas, optimizing queries, writing stored procedures, and collaborating with other developers to integrate databases with application code. Job description

About Rockefeller Capital Management
Rockefeller Capital Management was established in 2018 as a leading independent financial advisory services firm. Originally founded in 1882 as the family office of John D. Rockefeller, the Firm has evolved to offer strategic advice to ultra- and high-net-worth individuals and families, institutions, and corporations from offices in 33 markets throughout the United States, as well as an office in London. The Firm oversees $212 billion in client assets as of April 30, 2026.
Position
We are seeking a Senior Backend Developer to join our Platform Development team. This role splits focus between two areas: building the APIs and services that power our internal applications and designing and evolving the databases behind them. Our advisors and operations teams rely on dashboards, workflows, and integrations daily - you'll own the backend systems and data architecture that make them work.
This is a hands-on senior role. You'll design database schemas, normalize data models, write and tune complex queries and build the .NET APIs that expose that data to consumers. We have active database projects that need someone who thinks carefully about data modeling - not just someone who can write a SELECT statement. Our stack is .NET/C# on Azure with SQL Server, and we're looking for someone who goes deep on backend and database fundamentals rather than broad across the full stack.
Responsibilities
  • Design and build backend services and RESTful APIs using C#/.NET, deployed on Microsoft Azure (App Service, Azure Functions, API Management)
  • Design and evolve database schemas - data modeling, normalization, indexing strategies, referential integrity, and migration planning for SQL Server databases
  • Write and optimize complex SQL queries, stored procedures, and views; troubleshoot performance issues across large datasets
  • Architect event-driven integrations using Azure Service Bus, Event Grid, or similar messaging infrastructure
  • Ensure security and compliance through secure coding practices, identity management (Entra ID), and adherence to OWASP standards
  • Drive reliability and performance - implement observability (Application Insights, structured logging), manage incidents, and optimize service performance
  • Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines (GitHub Actions) for automated testing, deployment, and environment management
  • Mentor engineers, conduct thorough code reviews, and establish backend engineering standards across the team
  • Collaborate with front-end engineers and product teams to define API contracts, scope features, and deliver incremental releases

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field (or equivalent practical experience)
  • 5-10 years of professional software development experience with a focus on backend/API development
  • Proven experience owning database architecture decisions (not just consuming existing schemas)
  • Experience designing and operating services on Microsoft Azure (App Service, Azure Functions, API Management, Service Bus, Event Grid)
  • Experience working in regulated environments, preferably financial services

Skills
  • Strong expertise in C#/.NET (ASP.NET Core Web API)
  • Deep database skills, including:
    • Schema design and normalization
    • Migration planning
    • Indexing strategies
    • Query performance optimization across large datasets
  • Solid understanding of distributed systems patterns, messaging, and event-driven architecture
  • Identity and access management (Entra ID / Azure AD, OAuth 2.0, managed identities)
  • Observability tools (Application Insights, structured logging, alerting)
  • CI/CD and DevOps practices (GitHub Actions, infrastructure as code using Bicep or Terraform)
  • Testing frameworks and practices (unit, integration, contract testing)
  • Experience with containerization (Docker) and microservices architecture
  • Familiarity with data platforms (Databricks, Microsoft Fabric) - preferred but not required

Compensation Range
The anticipated base salary range for this role is $130,000 to $150,000. Base salary for the role will depend on several factors, including a candidate's qualifications, skills, competencies, and experience, and may fall outside of the range shown. In addition, this role may be eligible for a discretionary bonus. Rockefeller Capital Management offers a comprehensive benefit package including health coverage, vacation time, paid leave, retirement plan, and more.
