What is a backend database developer?

Backend Database Developers are IT professionals who design, build, and maintain the databases that power websites and applications. They focus on how data is stored, accessed, and managed behind the scenes, ensuring reliability, efficiency, and security. Their work includes creating database schemas, optimizing queries, writing stored procedures, and collaborating with other developers to integrate databases with application code. They often use technologies like SQL, NoSQL, and various database management systems. Their expertise is essential for handling large volumes of data and supporting business operations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a backend database developer?

To thrive as a Backend Database Developer, you need expertise in database design, SQL programming, and data modeling, usually supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with relational and NoSQL databases (such as MySQL, PostgreSQL, MongoDB), cloud platforms, and certifications like Oracle Certified Professional are highly valuable. Analytical thinking, problem-solving, and effective collaboration are standout soft skills for this position. These skills are critical for ensuring data integrity, optimizing performance, and supporting scalable, reliable backend systems.

What are the typical collaboration points between a backend database developer and other teams in a tech organization?

Backend Database Developers frequently work alongside frontend developers, DevOps engineers, and data analysts to ensure seamless data flow and application performance. They collaborate with frontend teams to design APIs and data models that meet user requirements, and with DevOps to optimize database deployment and scaling strategies. Regular communication with data analysts helps ensure that data structures support reporting and analytics needs. This collaborative environment encourages cross-functional problem-solving and continuous learning.

Job description

Applied Medical is a new generation medical device company with a proven business model and commitment to innovation fueled by rapid business growth and expansion. Our company has been developing and manufacturing advanced surgical technologies for over 35 years and has earned a strong reputation for excellence in the healthcare field. Our unique business model, combined with our dedication to delivering the highest quality products, enables team members to contribute in a larger capacity than is possible in typical positions.

Position Description

The Application Developer at Applied Medical plays a critical role in building end-to-end business applications that span both front-end and back-end technologies. This position is responsible for designing, developing, and deploying complete solutions, from user interfaces through APIs and databases, that support Applied Medical's internal teams and business operations.

This position contributes to the quality and reliability of Applied Medical's application ecosystem by delivering cohesive, full-stack solutions rather than isolated components. The Application Developer collaborates with business analysts, UX/UI designers, database administrators, and DevOps engineers to build integrated applications that meet business needs from concept through deployment.

Applied Medical is committed to innovation in medical device manufacturing, and the Application Developer supports this mission by ensuring internal business applications are well-architected, secure, and maintainable across the full technology stack.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design, develop, and maintain full-stack applications using C#, .NET Core, React, and TypeScript, delivering complete features from database through user interface.
  • Build and integrate RESTful and GraphQL APIs, connecting front-end applications to back-end services and data stores.
  • Design and optimize data models across SQL Server, PostgreSQL, and Azure Cosmos DB.
  • Deploy and maintain applications on Azure, including App Services, Azure Functions, and containerized workloads using Docker and Kubernetes.
  • Implement responsive, accessible user interfaces and collaborate with UX/UI designers to translate Figma designs into functional applications.
  • Write automated tests using xUnit, NUnit, Cypress, Playwright, and React Testing Library to ensure reliability across the stack.
  • Apply security best practices across the application, including Azure Active Directory (Azure AD) integration, Auth0, encryption, and secure coding standards.
  • Configure and maintain continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD) pipelines using Azure DevOps or GitHub Actions.
  • Use AI-assisted development tools, such as GitHub Copilot, to improve development efficiency while maintaining coding standards.
Success in This Role Looks Like
  • Deliver complete, end-to-end features that meet business requirements on time and function reliably from database to user interface.
  • Build strong collaborative relationships with business analysts, UX/UI designers, and other engineering teams.
  • Write clean, well-tested code across the stack that passes code reviews with minimal revisions.
  • Proactively identify and resolve issues that span multiple layers of an application, from data access through the user interface.
  • Contribute to shared standards and practices that improve full-stack development efficiency across the team.
  • Continuously learn and adopt new tools and patterns across both front-end and back-end technologies.
Position Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related technical field, or equivalent professional back-end software development experience.
  • Proficiency in C# and .NET Core for back-end application development.
  • Experience with React and TypeScript for front-end development.
  • Knowledge of responsive web design, CSS preprocessors such as SASS or SCSS, and layout techniques including Flexbox and CSS Grid.
  • Familiarity with build tools and bundlers, such as Webpack or Vite, and package managers such as npm or yarn.
  • Working knowledge of relational and NoSQL databases, such as SQL Server, PostgreSQL, or Azure Cosmos DB.
  • Experience designing and consuming RESTful or GraphQL APIs.
  • Familiarity with cloud platforms, preferably Microsoft Azure, including deployment and basic infrastructure concepts.
  • Experience with version control systems, preferably Git (GitHub or Azure DevOps).
  • Understanding of automated testing practices and frameworks, such as xUnit, NUnit, Cypress, Playwright, and React Testing Library.
Preferred
  • Experience in healthcare, medical device, or manufacturing industries.
  • Experience with containerization and orchestration tools such as Docker and Kubernetes.
  • Knowledge of messaging and integration patterns using Azure Service Bus or RabbitMQ.
  • Experience with Azure Active Directory (Azure AD) or other identity and access management platforms.
  • Familiarity with design handoff tools such as Figma.
  • Experience with agile methodologies and Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC) practices.
  • Experience mentoring junior team members or leading full-stack technical initiatives.
Benefits
  • Competitive compensation range: $70304 - $130000 / year (California).
  • Comprehensive benefits package.
  • Training and mentorship opportunities.
  • On-campus wellness activities.
  • Education reimbursement program.
  • 401(k) program with discretionary employer match.
  • Generous vacation accrual and paid holiday schedule.

Please note that the compensation range may be adjusted in the future, and bonus and incentive compensation plans may apply.

Our total reward package reflects our commitment to employee growth and well-being, as we invest in your development and offer a range of benefits designed to enhance your career and life.
