A Backcountry job typically involves working in remote outdoor settings, such as national parks, wilderness areas, or ski resorts. These jobs can include roles in guiding, retail, gear maintenance, customer service, or logistics for outdoor enthusiasts. Employees often have a passion for adventure, outdoor sports, and sustainability. Depending on the role, responsibilities may include assisting customers with gear selection, leading outdoor excursions, or ensuring safe backcountry experiences. Many positions are seasonal and require knowledge of outdoor equipment, survival skills, or environmental stewardship.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the backcountry position, and why are they important?

To thrive in a Backcountry Specialist role, you need strong outdoor skills, wilderness navigation expertise, and often first aid or wilderness survival certifications. Technical tools such as GPS devices, topographic maps, satellite phones, and safety equipment are commonly used on the job. Excellent communication, adaptability, and teamwork skills help you interact with clients, coworkers, and handle changing conditions in remote environments. These skills are vital for ensuring safety, providing excellent client experiences, and successfully managing the unpredictable demands of backcountry work.

What are some common challenges faced by backcountry specialists on the job?

Backcountry Specialists often encounter unpredictable weather conditions, remote terrain, and the need to make quick, effective decisions to ensure safety. Navigating logistical issues such as limited communication, resource management, and responding to medical emergencies are also frequent challenges. Developing strong problem-solving abilities and remaining calm under pressure are crucial for overcoming these obstacles. Team collaboration and thorough preparation help ensure a successful and safe experience for both staff and clients.

Job description

At Backcountry, our mission is to connect people to their passions. Our four online stores—Backcountry, Competitive Cyclist, MotoSport and, SteepandCheap—aim to supply our customers with the gear, knowledge, and inspiration necessary to get out there and chase down life’s greatest moments. We do this by providing the biggest and best assortment of premium outdoor products, superior shopping experience, personalized Gearhead expertise, lightning-fast and accurate fulfillment, and inspirational, informative, and community-centered content.

Adventure is our Culture. Join a team that celebrates a lifestyle as bold as the terrain we love. At Backcountry, we are rooted in adventure, recognition, and wellbeing on and off the mountain. We spotlight employee stories, celebrate milestones, and offer exclusive outdoor perks. Whether you are at HQ, in a retail store, or remote, you will be part of a team that thrives on energy, exploration, and connection.

  1. Reports to: Sr. HR Manager
  2. Location: Christiansburg, VA, On-Site 100%, No Remote Options
 About the Role

You will serve as the on-site HR presence for Backcountry's Virginia Fulfillment Center, owning the full people function for a high-volume hourly workforce where your decisions directly shape culture, retention, and operational performance. Your scope spans every touchpoint of the employee lifecycle, and your impact is felt on the floor every day.

At 6-12 months, success looks like measurable improvement in turnover, a supervisory team that is meaningfully stronger in their people management capability, and ER matters handled with consistency, speed, and zero compliance exposure. Leaders trust you, employees know you, and HR is seen as a driver of results and not a back-office function.

This is a lean team. You will own a lot, move fast, and make decisions with full end-to-end responsibility.

What you get to do every day:
Operational HR Partnership
  • Serve as a key HR partner to FC leaders on day-to-day people operations.
  • Participate in decision-making discussions that impact staffing, retention, and culture.
  • Help create accountability through shared ownership of people metrics and leadership cross-training.
Talent Acquisition & Onboarding
  • Lead local onboarding efforts, ensuring a welcoming and consistent new hire experience.
Employee Experience & Retention
  • Champion the full employee lifecycle—from onboarding to development milestones and recognition.
  • Identify trends from exit interviews and employee feedback, and use insights to improve retention and engagement.
  • Collaborate with the team to set and track clear retention goals.
Training & Development
  • Design and deliver supervisor training and development programs.
  • Help upskill leaders through instructor-led sessions and on-the-job support.
HR Operations & Compliance
  • Maintain accurate employee records and compliance documentation.
  • Partner with Safety and Operations teams to support OSHA initiatives and maintain a culture of safety.
  • Assist in employee relations matters, conduct investigations, and recommend appropriate next steps.
  • Support DEI and engagement initiatives at the local level.
Data & Reporting
  • Create and share monthly HR metrics with site leadership, contributing to broader reporting consistency across locations.
  • Track progress on key indicators including turnover, hiring performance, engagement scores, and compliance.
What you bring to the role:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business, or related field.
  • 2–4 years of experience in an HR Generalist or related role—ideally in a fulfillment, logistics, or manufacturing setting.
  • Strong working knowledge of employment law and HR fundamentals.
  • Comfortable supporting both hourly and salaried employees in a high-paced, frontline environment.
  • Proactive communicator who builds trust and influences across all levels.
  • Demonstrated success with recruiting, onboarding, employee relations, and retention.
  • Experience with HRIS systems and strong proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
  • Bonus: Familiarity with OSHA or safety regulations in an operational setting.
What’s in it for you? Joining Backcountry isn’t just about having a seat at the table—it’s about helping redesign the table entirely. You’ll be challenged, stretched, and supported as you grow faster than you thought possible. In addition to competitive compensation, we offer:
  • Executive Access: Work directly with brand CEOs and senior leadership, solving real business problems and earning mentorship from top operators.
  • AI-First Skill Building: Get hands-on with the most advanced AI tools in the market. From automation to prompt engineering, you’ll build a modern tech stack that sets you apart in any industry.
  • Accelerated Career Path: High performers are quickly entrusted with greater responsibility, new challenges, and leadership opportunities across our portfolio of brands.
  • Competitive benefits: Paid time off policies, 401(k)/RRSP match, medical/dental/vision and a variety of supplemental policies, and employee discounts at our portfolio companies
