Back End Programming information

What are some common challenges faced by back end programmers when working on cross-functional teams?

Back end programmers often collaborate closely with front end developers, designers, and product managers, which can present challenges such as aligning technical back end solutions with user-facing requirements and timelines. Communication gaps may occur when translating business goals into technical tasks or integrating APIs with front end components. Staying adaptable and maintaining clear documentation can help back end programmers ensure smooth collaboration and project success in a cross-functional environment.

What does a back end programmer do?

A back end programmer develops and maintains the server-side components of web applications, including databases, server logic, and APIs. They use programming languages like Java, Python, or Ruby and work with frameworks and tools to ensure data is processed efficiently and securely. Strong problem-solving skills and knowledge of server management are essential for this role.

What is back end programming?

Back end programming refers to the development of server-side logic, databases, and application programming interfaces (APIs) that power the functionality of web and mobile applications. Back end programmers write code that handles data storage, processing, and security, allowing the front end (what users see) to interact with servers and databases. Common back end languages include Python, Java, Ruby, PHP, and Node.js. These developers ensure that applications run smoothly, securely, and efficiently behind the scenes.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a back end programmer?

To thrive as a Back End Programmer, you need strong proficiency in server-side languages (such as Java, Python, or Node.js), knowledge of databases (SQL/NoSQL), and a solid understanding of algorithms and data structures. Familiarity with frameworks (like Django, Spring, or Express), RESTful API development, and version control systems (e.g., Git) is typically required, along with relevant certifications or a computer science degree. Problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective communication are essential soft skills for collaborating with teams and troubleshooting complex issues. These competencies ensure robust, scalable, and maintainable back end systems that support seamless application performance.

What is the difference between Back End Programming vs Front End Development?

AspectBack End ProgrammingFront End Development
Primary FocusServer-side logic, databases, application architectureUser interface, website layout, client-side interactions
Required SkillsProgramming languages like Java, Python, Ruby; database management; server managementHTML, CSS, JavaScript; UI/UX design; responsive design
Work EnvironmentBackend servers, cloud platforms, databasesWeb browsers, design tools, client devices
Common CertificationsOracle Java Certification, AWS Certified DeveloperCertified Web Developer, Adobe Certified Expert

Back End Programming focuses on server-side development, managing databases, and application logic, while Front End Development centers on creating the visual and interactive aspects of websites. Both roles are essential for full-stack development but differ in skills, tools, and daily tasks.

Job description

EvenUp is on a mission to close the justice gap using technology and AI. We empower personal injury lawyers and victims to get the justice they deserve. Our products enable law firms to secure faster settlements, higher payouts, and better outcomes for victims injured through no fault of their own in vehicle collisions, accidents, natural disasters, and more.

We are one of the fastest-growing vertical SaaS companies in history, and we are just getting started. EvenUp is backed by top VCs, including Bessemer Venture Partners, Bain Capital Ventures, SignalFire, and Lightspeed. We are looking to expand our team with talented, driven, and collaborative individuals who seek to have a lasting impact. Learn more at www.evenuplaw.com.

🎥 Life as an Engineer at EvenUp

Join EvenUp’s AI Platform team, dedicated to making large language models (LLMs) more accessible, scalable, and impactful across the engineering organization. We build leading LLM-powered systems for the legal industry, transforming how complex legal documents are extracted, summarized, and structured for use by our clients every day.

This role operates at the intersection of backend engineering, LLM integration, and hands-on experimentation. You will collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of Data Scientists, Researchers, and Software Engineers to tackle challenging generative AI problems. Together, we maintain the foundational infrastructure enabling EvenUp’s product teams to leverage LLMs safely and efficiently at scale.

This is an excellent opportunity for engineers seeking deep technical ownership, backend system design, and work on innovative platforms that create impact across an entire company—while contributing to technology that advances fairness and accessibility within the legal system.

This is a hybrid role, 3x per week at our SF office three days per week.

What you’ll do:
  • Backend Systems & Infrastructure: Lead the design, development, and optimization of robust backend systems for deploying LLM-based algorithms and services.

  • End-to-End Ownership: Manage projects through their complete lifecycle—from architecture to deployment, monitoring, and improvement.

  • Cross-Team Enablement: Work with other engineering teams to understand use cases and deliver scalable platform solutions.

  • Engineering Excellence: Develop high-quality, maintainable code using a modern tech stack (Python, Postgres, Kubernetes, Elasticsearch).

  • Growth & Collaboration: Grow as an engineer working alongside world-class peers on impactful, cutting-edge generative AI projects.

What we look for:
  • Extensive experience building frameworks, libraries, and distributed systems with a focus on reliability, observability, and performance.

  • Proficiency delivering production-ready code, managing infrastructure, and building RESTful APIs to industry standards.

  • Experience owning and delivering complex technical projects.

  • Success in startup or high-growth environments valuing speed, collaboration, and ownership.

  • Proficiency in Python or other languages (Go, Java, C++).

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with proven cross-disciplinary collaboration.

Responsibilities:
  • Design, build, and enhance scalable backend systems supporting LLM-driven products and internal platforms.

  • Own infrastructure and services for reliable deployment, experimentation, and iteration of AI-powered systems.

  • Collaborate with engineering teams to gather requirements and deliver reusable, scalable solutions.

  • Influence the technical direction and long-term architecture of EvenUp’s AI platform.

  • Maintain high standards for reliability, performance, observability, and maintainability.

  • Drive projects from early design through deployment, monitoring, and iterative improvement.

Bonus (Nice to have):
  • Background with AI systems, LLMs, or machine learning infrastructure.

  • Experience in legal tech or social impact–driven products.

  • Prior work supporting internal platforms or developer-facing tools.
