Back End Programming information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Back End Programmer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Back End Programmer, you need strong proficiency in server-side languages (such as Java, Python, or Node.js), knowledge of databases (SQL/NoSQL), and a solid understanding of algorithms and data structures. Familiarity with frameworks (like Django, Spring, or Express), RESTful API development, and version control systems (e.g., Git) is typically required, along with relevant certifications or a computer science degree. Problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective communication are essential soft skills for collaborating with teams and troubleshooting complex issues. These competencies ensure robust, scalable, and maintainable back end systems that support seamless application performance.

What are some common challenges faced by back end programmers when working on cross-functional teams?

Back end programmers often collaborate closely with front end developers, designers, and product managers, which can present challenges such as aligning technical back end solutions with user-facing requirements and timelines. Communication gaps may occur when translating business goals into technical tasks or integrating APIs with front end components. Staying adaptable and maintaining clear documentation can help back end programmers ensure smooth collaboration and project success in a cross-functional environment.

What is back end programming?

Back end programming refers to the development of server-side logic, databases, and application programming interfaces (APIs) that power the functionality of web and mobile applications. Back end programmers write code that handles data storage, processing, and security, allowing the front end (what users see) to interact with servers and databases. Common back end languages include Python, Java, Ruby, PHP, and Node.js. These developers ensure that applications run smoothly, securely, and efficiently behind the scenes.

What is the difference between Back End Programming vs Front End Development?

AspectBack End ProgrammingFront End Development
Primary FocusServer-side logic, databases, application architectureUser interface, website layout, client-side interactions
Required SkillsProgramming languages like Java, Python, Ruby; database management; server managementHTML, CSS, JavaScript; UI/UX design; responsive design
Work EnvironmentBackend servers, cloud platforms, databasesWeb browsers, design tools, client devices
Common CertificationsOracle Java Certification, AWS Certified DeveloperCertified Web Developer, Adobe Certified Expert

Back End Programming focuses on server-side development, managing databases, and application logic, while Front End Development centers on creating the visual and interactive aspects of websites. Both roles are essential for full-stack development but differ in skills, tools, and daily tasks.

Job description

nou Systems, Inc. (nSI) is now officially a 100% ESOP company! We value teamwork and collaboration, and this transition allows us to take that commitment to a new level. nSI empowers our customers by supplying products, services, and expertise with powerful, data driven insights that transform defense systems and improve capabilities.

nou Systems, Inc. (nSI) is building systems that solve our nation's most challenging defense problems in an enjoyable, stimulating environment. We’re known for fielding revolutionary missile defense systems, pioneering step changes in RF seeker technology, introducing principled AI systems, and rapidly pioneering novel defense platforms, from space to the seabed. We're looking for talented builders with high levels of curiosity and extremely strong grounding in fundamentals and engineering first principles. If you're hungry for harder problems and want to build products that actually get into users’ hands, we’ve got you covered.

We are pleased to announce an opening for a Senior Back End Software Developer who will join our Technical Solutions Division and JSTC2 Team in Huntsville, Alabama to build software that provides warfighting training exercise participants unparalleled access to information about the unfolding scenario. You’ll be part of a team that is not only modernizing the interface to the underlying warfighting simulations but also finding new and innovative ways of surfacing deep information about the scenario, providing end users the right information right when they need it.

Responsibilities:

Our small team is developing Government Off-the-Shelf software that is currently in use in ongoing warfighting exercises. We’re seeking developers who can accelerate our progress along our years-long product roadmap. You’ll be an integral part of a multidisciplinary software team combining a web-based front end, large-data-management back end, and on-prem LLM-powered data exploration.

We’re looking for developers who still enjoy coding while taking advantage of newer agentic coding approaches, and who want to help junior developers level up their skills through mentoring and focused code reviews. We need people who enjoy working in tandem with other talented developers, architects, QA, and integration/DevOps, and who rise to the challenge of team communication and cohesion in an Agile/SAFe team. We want people who are passionate about the quality of software we deliver. You’ll need to be comfortable with developing software that’s delivered to end users on a 10-week cadence, helping elicit end user needs rather than being handed a pile of DOORS-managed requirements, and scoping work even in the absence of perfect information.

Basic Qualifications:

Required Qualifications – lacking any disqualifies you from this job:

  • Master’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related technical field, or Bachelor’s in those fields plus 4 years of experience above the baseline required qualification.
  • 6+ years of full-time professional experience in software development, with 2+ years in technical leadership roles.
  • Must possess or be able to obtain an active Secret Security Clearance.
  • U.S. Citizen.

Technical Competencies – you must demonstrate expertise in:

  • Software development in Go and Python (with some C++) as an individual contributor without agentic coding support
  • Production code: modular, unit tested, supports integration and end-to-end testing, maintained in source control (Git + GitLab).
  • Scrum Agile software development, including being active in ceremonies (standup, sprint reviews, Product Increment planning).
  • Team-focused development: ticket management, constructive peer reviews, backlog management.

Core Skills:

  • Mentor and lead technical contributors: be a force multiplier.
  • Support software architecture development: contribute to our product’s overall structure in support of our Chief Architect.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills: communicate your technical decisions, back them up with quantitative information, and flex with the needs of the wider team and project when necessary.
  • Evaluate emerging technologies: help us intelligently use new libraries, languages, software, architectures, and tools such as agentic coding.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with distributed simulation systems, especially Distributed Interactive Simulation (DIS) messaging.
  • Experience with cloud-ready microservice architecture, including MQTT communication protocol.
  • Comfortable developing in a containerized (Docker) Linux-based (Ubuntu) environment.
  • Experience developing for a Continuous Integration/Continuous Development (CI/CD) pipeline.
  • Experience with databases (PostgreSQL) and database optimization (indexing, stored procedures, query tuning, data partitioning, normalization/denormalization, table optimization).
  • Active Top Secret clearance.
