We are a student-focused community built on continuous improvement and a genuine commitment to serving those we teach. Through education, we empower change and build stronger, healthier communities. Our hard-working team runs on collaboration and mutual respect, for one another and for every student we serve.
What You Will Do:

The primary responsibility is to tutor students in the fundamental skills of math, statistics, financial math (i.e., costing) and computer science (if applicable), as well as other academic skills at the Wheeling campus and online. Tutoring occurs through one-on-one appointments and in small workshops utilizing various modes, including in-person, phone, email, and video conferencing software. The Learning Support Specialist will help monitor and communicate the progress of students, particularly those identified as below-level in their math skills (and computer science if applicable), to relevant faculty and staff, reach out to offer assistance to at-risk students, and accurately track student tutoring usage. The Learning Support Specialist responsibilities also include scheduled hours in virtual Study Tables to ensure seamless access to resources for students and promoting and facilitating Learning Support event and workshop offerings to students, faculty, and other stakeholders. Finally, the Learning Support Specialist (Math) or (Math & Computer Science) will support faculty and students in math-intensive courses as well as scheduled hours for in-class Computer Science & Information Systems support (if applicable).
- Tutor for general education and advanced math courses at the college level, including algebra, statistics, calculus, basic financial math, math content for teachers, and/or computer science courses as well as general academic skills, including Microsoft Excel navigation. Provide math support for major and graduate courses with substantial math components. Monitor student academic progress and promote usage of tutoring services.
- Collaborate with faculty to support at-risk students. Conduct class visits at the beginning of each term, respond to faculty alerts, and provide embedded support in online and blended courses.
- Create and present math and/or computer science workshops/webinars and create asynchronous resources to support students in improving their math and/or computer science skills.
- Contribute to strategic plan-affiliated projects and support departmental promotional efforts, including work on departmental data, with guidance from Learning Support leadership.
- Bachelor's Degree in Mathematics or Computer Science.
- One (1+) plus year experience tutoring or teaching math skills and content, particularly in the areas of college math, algebra, statistics, math content for teachers, accounting and other financial math, along with knowledge of graphing calculators. Willingness to learn the departments' curriculums.
- One (1+) plus year experience teaching or tutoring in diverse modalities (hybrid/blended, online).
- One (1+) plus year experience with students of diverse backgrounds and abilities; specific knowledge of the needs of multilingual and multidialectal students.
- Basic technology navigation and computer skills, including the Microsoft Office suite (Word, PowerPoint, Excel).
- Effective written and oral communication skills with the ability to develop and maintain genuine, positive, and consistent communication.
Preferred Skills
- Knowledge of specialized mathematical and data analysis content areas such as linear algebra, statistical analysis, real analysis, business data analytics, and/or accounting/business concepts.
- Proficiency using various programming languages and software such as Python, Java, GitHub, SQL, and/or Jupyter Notebook for tutoring and internal data analysis.
Availability to work one late night a week (until at least 7 pm) with a late start required and may require occasional travel to other campuses.
